As the sports season rolls into a summer lull before the Olympics, it's time for the second round of elections for the Sports Movie all of Fame. Full results from the first class can be found on our website, but Johnny Lawrence, Ty Webb, Kelly Leak and Benny "the Jet" Rodriguez all made it on the strength of your votes. Instead of electing another class of athletes, we're focusing on the brains behind the brawn and determining which coaches are worthy of enshrinement in the Sports Movie Hall of Fame. Take a look at their credentials below and cast your vote at the end of the original post. Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) Accomplishments: Three time MLB MVP, hit 534 career HR, taught children all across the country to "avoid The Clap", totally nailed that waitress in South Bend Hall Pitch: Dugan should be appreciated for his off-field contributions just as much for his on-field. Not only did he help popularize one of the first professional women's...

  • Cannot forget some of these folks:
Reggie Dunlop (Paul Newman) - Slap Shot
Pop Fisher (Wilford Brimley) - The Natural
BA Strothers (GD Spradlin) - North Dallas Forty or Coach Moreland Smith in One on One
Max Corkle (Jack Warden) - Heaven Can Wait
  • well done sir!
  • Norman Dale (OBVIOUSLY!) and Bill Yoast (because they shafted him in the movie. Bigots.). Love the post.
  • D'Amato is one of my favorites. Don't forget he also left and took over the new expansion team with full GM powers (including stealing away playmaker and ticket seller Willie Beamin).

Things I Wish I Had Said

1. "In high school I took some science, some English, some hub caps, and some wheel covers." Gates Brown, the Tigers' pinch-hitter extraordinaire, has been credited with this gem, which for whatever reason is one of my favorite baseball quotes of all time -- and it's not even really about baseball. Brown got his nickname for having spent some time in prison. ...

Tribe Spring Training: Unanswered Questions

We’ve seen just about three weeks of Spring Training action in Goodyear, Arizona, and your 2009 Cleveland Indians still have a bunch of questions that must be addressed sooner rather than later. Blue Chips: Shaq, Penny, and Nick Nolte

1994’s Blue Chips was a sports flick that starred Nick Nolte as a college basketball coach whose team couldn’t win or attract quality recruits, mainly because other teams were paying their players.  If you’ve seen the movie you know how the rest goes, so just watch these clips to take you back. Nick Nolte goes all Bobby Knight and shows off his punting skills:...

Tribe Notes: Gimenez Walk-off HR Beats Mariners

One thing is for sure, the stock of Indians minor league catcher/utility-man Chris Gimenez has gone through the roof following yesterday’s game-winning three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth off of the Mariner’s Luis Pena. Gimenez came to the plate with two outs following back-to-back walks to Carlos Santana and Wilson Valdez. He knew that the Mariners right-hander...

Tribe Notes: Hafner’s bat looks slow, Lee gets pummeled

The hearts of many a Cleveland fan, and even Tribe management rides on the recovery of the man they call “Pronk”. “Adam Miller’s career on the line”

Head Athletic Trainer for the Indians, Lonnie Soloff, had some frightening news today concerning the Indians once top prospect.
