Terence Crawford’s trainer, Brian McIntyre, says his fighter will target the Canelo Alvarez bout after his golfing.

Since he knocked out Errol Spence Jr, Bud has been chasing the fight with the Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion. The win made him the first Undisputed Welterweight Champion of the four-belt era, making him undisputed in two weight classes. The Spence rematch broke down, leaving Crawford free to pursue the Canelo bout.

However, Alvarez distanced himself from the fight, stating he would get no praise for beating a 147 fighter who was moving up three weight classes. Since then, the WBO has ordered Crawford to face Sebastian Fundora for the WBO Junior Middleweight Title. Bud is the WBO Super Welterweight Champion, which makes him mandatory at 154.

Crawford’s Next Bout

However, after Fundora’s win over Tim Tszyu to grab the WBO and WBC belts at 154, Errol Spence Jr. got in the ring to state he was interested in facing the champion. That means Fundora could vacate the WBO belt to face Spence for the WBC, leaving Crawford to fight Josh Kelly for the vacant WBO strap. That fight won’t generate big numbers, leaving Crawford in a dilemma.

“I would say the most honorable thing for Crawford is to fight [Jaron Boots] Ennis, and he would have no problem with the weight but he’s looking for money. He wants to fight Canelo for money, a payday, and I don’t know if he’ll get the payday against Fundora. My understanding is he wants to be a co-promoter because he’s a free agent, and that will not happen that way,” Sampson Lewkowicz (Fundora’s promoter) said

Canelo will face Jaime Munguia on May 4, with suggestions he is ducking David Benavidez. The Mexican Monster has been the WBC Super Middleweight Interim Champion for more than two years. Benavidez will now face Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the WBC Light Heavyweight Interim Title. That has created the narrative that Canelo is ducking Benavidez, which could see Alvarez face Crawford as a compromise. If that happens, Bud is ready for the smoke.

Crawford vs Canelo

“After the golf, that’s probably what he wants, Canelo. Bud beats him. He outboxes him. We’re not worried about no power. We know how to roll with punches. We know how to take power,” McIntyre said

Nevertheless, Crawford has to look at his career seriously. He is 36 and seen as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. However, fighting once a year at this stage is not enough for the boxer to secure the biggest fights.

He is not a big commercial draw like Canelo or Spence, despite arguably being a better boxer than the two regarding skills. To keep him relevant, Crawford could benefit from remaining active rather than simply waiting for a Canelo payday. But since Crawford sees Canelo as a legacy-defining fight, making him undisputed in a third weight class, Bud knows he may only get a few chances to go down in history.
