Entering Saturday nights fight with Matthew Macklin at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut there were questions hanging over the head of Kazakhstan's Gennady "GGG" Golovkin. Although he had a 26-0 record, Golovkin had never been tested against a top contender in boxing's middleweight division. There was a doubt to whether his glaring advantage in both technique and power over his past opponents would translate when he stepped up in quality. Those questions no longer exist.
Macklin brought a 29-4 record into the fight which would be his third tilt at the world title. Although his previous shots ended in a loss he surrendered nothing in defeat. Macklin gave long time champion Sergio Martinez eleven game rounds before succumbing to his greater ability. In his first title opportunity Macklin went twelve rounds with Felix Sturm before being robbed of the decision in Sturms home country. With twenty knockouts in his career, though, Matthew Macklin is a test for anyone in world boxing.
The bout began with Macklin attempting to push the pace as he took the centre of the ring in the early exchanges. That plan quickly went to the back burner once he felt the power of Golovkin as the champion settled midway through the opening frame. As the round came to an end Macklin was caught with a ferocious shot which rocked him backwards. Golovkin showed his opponent some mercy as the ropes were the only thing that kept the Irish-Brummie vertical. It would be his last act of mercy.
As the second stanza started the writing was already on the wall for Macklin. Golovkin picked him off with numerous stiff jabs and an array of lightning fast combinations cutting the former European champion as the round progressed. To Macklin's credit he didn't go out easily and opened up with his attacks, at one stage catching Golovkin with a big over-hand right. It made little impact, though, and GGG walked straight through it. As the pair took the stool between rounds a cut had been opened over Macklin's left eye. Soon it would be the least of his worries.
Golovkin went into overdrive in the 3rd, realising that the offensive Macklin had become vulnerable. As the challenger backed against the ropes and covered his already weary face the end was nigh. Golovkin landed a devastating left hook to the body which dropped Macklin to the floor. He didn't make the ten count. In fact he was left prone on the ground for several minutes.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the fight Macklin gave his opponent a glowing reference.
"Without a shadow of a doubt, he's definitely the best kid I've ever fought."
"I had a plan to exploit his weakness which was his lack of experience - he's only been 10 rounds once - but credit to him, he didn't even let me get into any kind of rhythm at all. He was patient, he was hard to hit clean, kept the pressure on, picked his punches well and that body shot took it out of me," Macklin said.
Macklin will have to go back to the drawing board after his third championship loss and will more than likely come back to the UK or Ireland for his next fight. Darren Barker is a long talked about fight and should he lose his own title bout in the coming months it will be a real possibility. The biggest fight for Macklin now, though, would likely be a homecoming against fellow Munsterman Andy Lee.
For Golovkin it may be a little more difficult to obtain an opponent. He is a natural born killer and with the politics that can exist in boxing it may be hard to match him up against fellow champions in his division, most notably Argentina's Sergio Martinez.
Another option may be superfight with England's Carl Froch who's promoter Eddie Hearn is more than happy to match the pair.
"According to HBO he'd be willing to step up to super-middleweight and a fight with Carl Froch would just be epic," exclaimed Hearn to Sky Sports.
"Froch, granite chin. Golovkin one of the biggest pound-for-pound punchers in the world. Carl Froch will fight any man. Whilst Golovkin is largely avoided Froch will quite willingly step up and ideally that is a fight that could happen in the middle of 2014."
Whatever is next for Golovkin there is no doubt that he is a future boxing superstar. With an ever expanding hoard of fans Golovkin is destined for the very top. He has the perfect blend of slick technique and raw power. Be afraid, middleweights, be very afraid.
