On Saturday night, two men entered a small ring in Nevada and beat the bejesus out of each other for a little over half an hour. That night Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado delivered the type of fight that old men reminisce fondly about with their kids on well-worn porches in hot summer days. It was a rematch that wasn’t entirely necessary. The first bout was not even a year removed, the ending had been relatively definitive despite the contentions of Alvarado’s team, and the public strongly favored Rios in the rematch. Yet such was the excitement of their first fight that this bout was one of the most hotly anticipated fights of the year; a surefire barn-burner. And boy did it deliver, outstripping their first fight and the lofty expectations that came with the rematch. Rios-Alvarado is the next great rivalry of boxing, in the same vein as Gatti-Ward, Pacquiao-Marquez or Ali-Frazier.
