Oscar De La Hoya Reveals Why Canelo Was The ‘Disloyal One’
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Pound-for-pound superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) parted ways with Premier Boxing Champions’ Al Haymon before coming back to the table and signing for a fight on another Cinco de Mayo weekend in a title defense against Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs). While Alvarez and Haymon have a good rapport, there is no denying that his chemistry with his former promoter, ‘Golden Boy’ Oscar De La Hoya, has been a story for the ages. In a recent revelation after their relationship went sour, De La Hoya shared his thoughts on the “disloyal one.”

‘The Golden Boy’ De La Hoya, who is currently preparing Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) for Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs), was in an interview with FightHype. In conversation, he opened up about his once cordial relationship with Alvarez. Moreover, he shed light on the incident that might have caused a rift between the duo. “One day, a reporter asked me if I thought Canelo needed another trainer, and I answered the reporter that maybe it was a good idea,” he said.

De La Hoya mentioned that this caused Canelo to consider this an attack on his friend and business partner, Eddy Reynoso. However, the former boxer turned promoter revealed that he had no such intention in his mind. “I had seven trainers in my career, and I learned things from each trainer. They all taught me something new,” said the promoter and former boxer with 39 wins and six defeats as a professional in the ring,” De La Hoya said.

This incident in 2020 saw him at the receiving end of severe backlash from both Canelo and Reynoso. In fact, they even went on to accuse him of being disloyal. On the other hand, De La Hoya believes that the duo has no say in any conversation about loyalty. “How can someone who goes jumping from promoter to promoter, from contract to contract, from television station to television station talk about loyalty? Who is the disloyal one here?” he said.

Canelo Alvarez vs Jaime Munguia Will See Three Title Fights

Cinco de Mayo has often witnessed some of Alvarez’s most iconic performances. While he will put his undisputed super middleweight world title on the line, the card will see three more title defenses.

Eimantas Stanionis (14-0-1, 9 KOs) will have the first title defense of his career as he defends his WBA (regular) welterweight title against Gabriel Maestre (6-0-1, 5 KOs). Meanwhile, Brandon Figueroa (24-1-1, 18 KOs) is set to defend his WBC interim featherweight title against Jessie Magdaleno (29-2, 18 KOs). Additionally, as the co-main event, Mario Barrios (28-2, 18 KOs) will defend his WBC interim welterweight title against Fabian Maidana (18-1, 13 KOs).
