picture alliance

Today, boxing world title fights take place around the globe and are more accessible to watch than ever before. Sometimes, championship bouts do not receive as much attention and go underreported. Big Fight Weekend commits to writing about boxing news, previews, and recaps. As such, the site now has a recurring segment on championship bouts – from around the world from the past week.

The focus of these pieces will be on clashes ranging from atomweight to heavyweight that had the WBA, WBC, IBF, and/or WBO titles on the line. Today’s edition of “Title Fights From Around the World” consists of just one recap. Over in Germany, there was a dramatic knockout involving Bakhram Murtazaliev (22-0, 16 KOs)

Bakhram Murtazaliev Becomes World Champion in Germany

Bakhram Murtazaliev Defeats Jack Culcay

Murtazaliev became a world champion after knocking out Jack Culcay (33-5, 14 KOs) in the 11th round.

The fight headlined an AGON Sports card at the Stadthalle in Falkensee, Germany. RBB were the broadcasters for those in Germany, while ESPN Knockout had the event available in select countries. With the win, Murtazaliev became the IBF super welterweight champion.

The Russian began the fight at a quick pace, becoming fatigued by the halfway point of the bout. Culcay took advantage and won rounds on the back of this. In round 11, Murtazaliev landed a left hook that stunned his opponent. He continued to land until Culcay finally went down from a winging right hand. Referee Timo Habighorst administered a count, and while Culcay did get up, the fight was waved off. The time of stoppage was 2:50.

Glory for Murtazaliev

Murtazaliev had been the IBF number-one contender since November 2019. In 2020, he was named the mandatory challenger. Since then, he had been receiving step-aside money to allow Jermell Charlo to pursue unifications in the division despite the two – being ordered to clash. Having finally got his title shot, Murtazaliev made the most of it.
