Trent Lockett, a key contributor on Arizona State's basketball team last season, will transfer to Marquette University for his final season of eligibility. Lockett, 21, decided to transfer from Arizona State to be closer to his mother, who is battling cancer. She lives in Golden Valley, Minn., which is six hours away from Milwaukee. With the new graduate transfer rules in the NCAA, Lockett will likely be allowed to join the Golden Eagles on the court next season. He earned his business communications degree from ASU within the past week. "Words can't express my gratitude to the program and all it has given me," Lockett said in a release from Arizona State. "I am now a proud graduate of ASU. I appreciate ASU's patience with me over the last few weeks as my family and I have made this difficult decision to transfer to another school and be closer to home. It's the hardest decision I've ever had to make. The reason I am transferring is to be closer to my mom, but at the same time I needed to make a good basketball decision, and Marquette provides a great fit for me to finish my collegiate basketball career." Getting Lockett to join the Golden Eagles is a huge coup for Marquette coach Buzz Williams, who was set to lose his two biggest offensive contributors from last season in Darius Johnson-Odom and Jae Crowder. Those two represented 47 percent of the team's scoring and 32 percent of the team's rebounding production in 2011-12. Lockett, a 6-foot-4 guard averaged 13.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in the 2011-12 season, with almost identical stats in the previous season (13.4 points and 5.3 rebounds). He led the team in points scored in each of the two years. "We continue to support Trent and his family through this difficult time," Arizona State coach Herb Sendek said. "We are proud of all that he has accomplished at Arizona State, including being able to celebrate his graduation this weekend with family and friends, and know he will always be a Sun Devil at heart. We are glad he has found a good place to complete his college career close to home so he can provide support to his mom Judy and know the Sun Devil nation will continue to follow his career."
