If you were one of the lucky 11,430 fans at the Garden yesterday afternoon to see Villanova gut out a 79-76 overtime victory over St. John's, you saw a delicious reminder of why the Big East ascended to become the best college basketball conference in the nation. Period. These weren't the two best teams in the league. The Johnnies (8-11) and Wildcats (10-10) came in with 2-5 league records and so many freshmen each school's trainer packs aspirin and children's aspirin. Yet after 45 minutes, despite all of the missed free throws (nine by Villanova and 11 by St. John's) and all the turnovers (23 by the Wildcats and 21 by the Red Storm), every fan, player and coach at the Garden buzzed about having had their addiction for competition sated.
