Rick Pitino and the Louisville Cardinals avoided their first ever four game losing streak in Big East play tonight as they defeated the Pittsburgh Panthers 64-61. Poor free throw shooting was detrimental to Louisville’s loss at Villanova last week, but the Cards were able to connect on their final six free throw attempts tonight, holding off a late run by the Panthers. Russ Smith returned to the starting line-up in a huge way, leading all scorers with 20 points. He also grabbed five rebounds. Peyton Siva scored only two points, but dished out 10 assists and abused Pitt’s pick-and-roll defense. Gorgui Dieng had one of his better overall performances of the season, finishing with 14 points, 12 rebounds, 5 blocks and four assists. Dieng hit two free throws and blocked a shot in the last minute of the game, helping the Cards hold on. Louisville had some trouble on the glass tonight.
