With the excitement of the 2011-2012 season rapidly approaching, Memphis fans and Tiger Nation couldn't wait to see their new team. The addition to the Tigers, none other than Memphis native, Adonis Thomas, a highly talented Memphis recruit added a prolific scorer to the fast paced hi-octane Tigers. That looked great on paper but the only part of that statement that’s true is the fact that Thomas is talented.

Head coach Josh Pastner has yet to establish any type of offense. I really wouldn't consider the Will Barton And one Mix tape an offense but I guess that’s what the Tigers practice. The Tigers, once ranked as high as eighth in the polls, have looked like lost cubs. For the Tigers to be successful they need to establish the inside game. Pastner has rarely gone inside. In fact, the Tigers rarely look inside to their beast, Black. The lackluster offense along with the lazy defense have given teams the ability to pick apart the Tigers. Both Murray State and Georgetown have exploited the Tigers who rank 168th in rebounding. Black has fouled out of 3 games this season while having 4 fouls in 4 other games.

Pastner must realize that his big beast is the key to the success of these Tigers. The offense must feed through him in order to open up passing lanes and to get defenders to double down on Black. The salary the coaches get paid they have to see that fundamentals are lacking. Pick and rolls, pick and pops and screens from other players are the going thing for successful teams, just look at Louisville, Georgetown and Duke. Also, stupid fouls are what plague these Tigers. Reaching in and running into players 50 feet from the basket aren’t  plays that Pastner drew up, at least I hope not. Black has to stop committing stupid fouls and start using his large frame. Put a body on someone, box out……does anyone else not see this? Senior forward Wesley Witherspoon and Freshman Adonis Thomas average more rebounds a game that Black.

The bottom line is this. Our beast needs to become just that. He needs to be our focal point on both offense and defense otherwise be prepared for a mediocre season. Conference play might not be a breeze through like a lot of people think. You get paid the big bucks Josh Pastner, so get out there and coach. Lets turn this team around and become a viable contender.
