UNC’s 2012 recruiting class was lean by Carolina standards last year, containing no five star recruits. This year however, UNC will be adding five star recruit Isaiah Hicks to a UNC squad primed to make an improvement over last year’s performance. Isaiah Hicks is a 6’8 210 power forward from Oxford, North Carolina who played his high school ball at Webb High School where he averaged an impressive 22.9 points, 12.9 rebounds and 5.6 blocks per game as a senior. This past spring, Hicks turned a lot of heads when he had a performance for the ages in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association boys basketball championship game when he led his team to a title while posting 34 points, 30 rebounds, and 7 blocks. After the game, one writer even suggested that it might have been the greatest performance by a player in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association in any sport. While no one expects Hicks to dominate immediately at UNC that performance was a good sign for hopeful Tar Heel fans. Isaiah Hicks Hicks is a great rebounder with incredible athleticism. Despite his size, he is an above average ball handler and has a pretty decent mid range jump shot. However, Early on, coach Roy Williams will look for Hicks to impact games on the defensive end with his shot blocking and rebounding. Hicks will be hoping to make an impact early for UNC but he could find himself in a struggle to find regular minutes his freshman year because of already established big men in Brice Johnson, James Michael Mcadoo, Joel James, and Desmond Hubert. Mcadoo will definitely start next season, and James and Johnson both showed a lot of promise last season so it will be interesting to see who wins the position battle for the four spot headed into next year.
