Louisville was predicted to be one of if not the best teams in the country for numerous reasons. Experience, depth and overall talent were all popular reasons, but having what was thought to be one of the best backcourts in the country was also a factor.
Peyton Siva and Russ Smith have both had solid seasons for Rick Pitino. Siva was the preseason Big East player of the year and is one of twelve finalists for the Bob Cousy Award. Smith had a lot of hype heading into this season after breaking through last year for the Cards. Russ has lived up to the hype and was named a finalist for the USBWA Oscar Robertson trophy.
Everything was smooth sailing until Jan. 19 when Louisville fell at home to Syracuse 70-68. The Cards have now lost four out of their last seven games and while Siva and Smith have taken turns having solid performances, it’s been quite a while since the two have collectively played well in the same game.
