via YouTube Sometimes brothers fight.  And sometimes brothers throw towels at each other.  That was the explanation Michigan State senior center Derrick Nix and junior guard Keith Appling gave for their little fracas during a timeout in Michigan State’s third round win against Memphis Saturday. Nix was upset about the lack of communication with Appling on ball screens and he made it known by spiking a towel at Appling from across the team huddle.  Appling, naturally, chucked his towel back in Nix’s direction. Nix said after the game, ”It’s out of love, that’s my best friend and little brother, and we respect one another and love each other, so we’ll just move past it.” Tom Izzo didn’t mind it.  He actually “loved it.” “Nix got after Appling, but 13 years ago, you know one of the most famous things that ever happened to me was walking down that hallway and listening to Mateen Cleaves get on his best friend in the world, Morris Peterson, and I had to go in there and almost, you know, so some things happen in public, some things happen in private. “But that’s what I meant about a player-coached team. I need players to get on players, sometimes. Players were a lot more vocal today, I just loved that.” You know the old adage.  Sticks and stones will break my bones, but towels will never hurt me.  Imagine if Nix had access to a stick.  Appling would be dealing with something other than the strained shoulder that he suffered in the second half.  He says he’ll be ready for next Friday’s Sweet 16 game.  As for the Nix/Appling relationship – they have been teammates for six of the last seven years (both attended Detroit Pershing, but Nix is a year older) – it’ll be just fine.
