And now, for one night only, the Golden Gophers can play some consequence-free basketball against the Michigan State Spartans. Two wins last week gave the Gophers  a bit of breathing room. Losing five out of six games would have put the Gophers squarely on the bubble, or even the wrong side of the bubble, and Wednesday evening's game in East Lansing  would have been a true must-win. As  a team, Minnesota is not the most mentally stable, and their decision making leaves a lot to be desired. I don't want to think about how the team would likely react in a pressure-cooker of a game in a mad house like the Breslin Center. Instead, the Gophers can play like they have something to prove without dire consequences if they do not, like  New Year's Eve when these two teams first met.

Michigan State Basketball: No. 12 Spartans look to settle the score against No. 25 Minnesota

EAST LANSING — Remember just one month ago when the Golden Gophers were arguably the best team in the nation? Well, the Michigan State Spartans do. The then-No. 9 Minnesota Golden Gophers (17-5, 5-4) opened the Big Ten season with a 76-63 victory over the then-No. 18 Michigan State Spartans (18-4, 7-2) on the last day of 2012. Banged-up backcourt leads No. 12 MSU

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Subtract the backcourt tandem of Keith Appling and Gary Harris, and Michigan States basketball team would have difficulty beating anybody in the Big Ten outside of Nebraska and Penn State. With them, the Spartans are ranked 12th in the country and are just a half-game out of first place at 19-4 overall and 8-2 in the conference. In Wednesday nights 61-50...

Injury Bug Hits the Spartans, Again:

Michigan State came back last game, after being down 10 at home against Illinois. The Spartans were hit with the injury bug again as Gary Harris and Travis Trice both left the game without returning. Keith Appling stepped up in a big way, finishing with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and a block. The newly named captain, or #CaptainKeith as I have been calling him on twitter...

Derrick Nix lands on a cheerleader trying to save the basketball

Michigan State Center Derrick Nix is a big boy to say the least.  In an attempt to save a ball from going out of bounds, the 6’9″ 270 pound center lost his balance throwing it back to Keith Appling and landed on a Spartan cheerleader.  The crowd’s reaction says it all, as they all let out an “Ohhh,” as the poor girl was crushed underneath him.  #12 Michigan State went...

Spartans may rely on Valentine

Michigan State needs freshman Denzel Valentine to turn his potential into production. Soon. ''I'm expecting big things out of him,'' Spartans coach Tom Izzo said. Gophers brace for Top-20 showdown at MSU

Injuries are a concern for Michigan State, but having Gary Harris available may quell some worries. Even a healthy lineup, however, couldn't beat Minnesota in this season's Big Ten opener. The No. 12 Spartans hope Harris is healthy enough to play Wednesday night when they try to continue their home dominance of the 18th-ranked Golden Gophers. Michigan State (18-4, 7-2...

4 things the Gophers need to do to right the ship

It hasn’t been a pretty ride recently in Gopher Land. After blowing through the gauntlet of games that opened the Big Ten conference season with a couple nice wins, the team has fallen on tough times recently with losses to Northwestern, Wisconsin and Michigan State and an unnecessary nailbiting win over Iowa. The Northwestern loss [...]
