Former Duke Blue Devil Alex Murphy is going to play for the Florida Gators. He will be playing for the same university and same coach as his older brother Erik Murphy did. Erik now is a rookie in the NBA with the Chicago Bulls. Alex should be able to contribute for the Florida Gators as soon as he can play.
Alex’s brother played four seasons for Florida and thrived in his last couple seasons that he even got to be a NBA draft pick. This probably helped Billy Donovan get Alex Murphy to transfer to Florida. He was able to get to know Florida, and also get to know Donovan this was the most likely of places for him to go. It will be a good fit for him, and will be able to compete for a National Championship there.
Murphy will be on a good team while at Florida, and he will be able to compete for more minutes. They have a big sophomore class, but Murphy should get plenty of minutes at Florida. He will be able to come in and be an experience player next season on a team full of younger players. He will be one of the oldest players on the team the next few seasons for Florida.
Murphy will be able to play either one of the forward positions, and will also be able to help stretch the floor. He will be able to play the power forward position. This could help them stretch the floor with Murphy, and give Donovan an opportunity to play Alex the same way he played his brother. This is probably another reason it was easy for Murphy to choose Florida, because he could see himself playing in Donovan’s system just like his brother.
Murphy will be a contributor for Donovan, and will get an opportunity to play. He had good moments at Duke, but never really played well enough or got enough minutes to show how good he can be. He will have to get more confidence and trust his game going forward, but if he gets an opportunity at Florida should be a great player for them. The problem with Duke is that they have plenty of wing players, and he couldn’t play in the post for Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s system.
In Florida hopefully Murphy will be able to find plenty of minutes. Also that he can be a big contributor for Florida, and be able to show how good he really is. The last small forward that transferred from Duke was Michael Gbinije, who transferred to Syracuse, and now is contributing for them this season. If Murphy made the right pick then he too will be able to help with Florida in seasons to come.
