CORAL GABLES — The Miami Hurricanes begin the postseason Wednesday night when they face Valparaiso in a first-round NIT game at the BankUnited Center.

Whether UM guard Durand Scott will be able to play remains uncertain.

Scott, who leads the Hurricanes in scoring (12.9) and assists (3.1), was ruled ineligible last week by the university for accepting impermissible travel benefits and is awaiting reinstatement from the NCAA.

The junior guard continues to practice with the team.

UM coach Jim Larranaga said Tuesday he has not heard any word regarding Scott's situation.

"Zero, nada, zilch. All the information we have, questions that were needed have been answered. Now you have to wait until the investigation is complete and the decision is made," he said.

Durand Scott's status uncertain

Brooklyn, N.Y., native Malcolm Grant still revels in the memory of being 7 years old and playing basketball at Madison Square Garden during halftime of a New York Knicks game.

“I played for Riverside Church in Harlem,” said the Miami senior guard, who also competed at The Garden as a freshman for Villanova. “It was crazy — and fun. When you’re 7 and playing in the world’s most famous arena, and then the bright lights come on and everyone is cheering for you, it’s so great.”

At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, the No.2 seed Hurricanes (19-12) face No. 7 Horizon League regular-season champion Valparaiso (22-11) at the BankUnited Center in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament.
