On the heels of a tumultuous several months filled with roster attrition, the Maryland men’s basketball team secured a commitment Friday morning from Georgia Tech transfer forward Robert Carter Jr., an individual with knowledge of the situation said. Carter will sit out a season per NCAA regulations before becoming a fourth-year junior in 2015-16. Carter, one of the country’s most productive big men while with the Yellow Jackets, represents a major boon for Coach Mark Turgeon and the Terrapins, who lost five transfers this spring after whiffing on the postseason altogether following a 17-15 campaign. Carter, who was recruited by Maryland out of high school and had developed a strong relationship with Turgeon, visited College Park this week, left Thursday without committing then offered his pledge the next day. The 6-foot-8, 247-pound Carter will immediately become one of Turgeon’s most prolific interior offensive presence, an area the Terps struggled with last season with Shaq Cleare, Charles Mitchell, Jon Graham and Damonte Dodd all logging minutes inside, with inconsistent results. Despite missing 10 games in January and February, Carter still averaged 11.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game last season, backing up a freshman year when he averaged 9.9 and 6.7 on 44.6 percent shooting from the field. He recorded 10 career double-doubles with the Yellow Jackets.
