Injuries are a concern for Michigan State, but having Gary Harris available may quell some worries. Even a healthy lineup, however, couldn't beat Minnesota in this season's Big Ten opener. The No. 12 Spartans hope Harris is healthy enough to play Wednesday night when they try to continue their home dominance of the 18th-ranked Golden Gophers. Michigan State (18-4, 7-2) seems likely to be without reserve guard Travis Trice unless he can pass a concussion test, but Harris (back spasms) probably will play. Both were injured in Thursday's 80-75 win over Illinois, and coach Tom Izzo would like to have at least one of the guards on the court. "If those two guys couldn't play, we are down to the nitty gritty," Izzo said. While Harris' back seems likely to comply, Trice is expected to be out and that may mean an increased role for Denzel Valentine. The freshman guard connected on all four of his field goals en route to a season-high 14 points Thursday. &...

(AP Photo) EAST LANSING — Freshman Gary Harris scored 15 points and added four assists to help lead the No. 12 Michigan State Spartans to a 61-50 victory over No. 18 Minnesota. Harris, who has been dealing with back issues since last Thursday’s victory over Illinois, was a game-time decision, and...

Banged-up backcourt leads No. 12 MSU

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Subtract the backcourt tandem of Keith Appling and Gary Harris, and Michigan States basketball team would have difficulty beating anybody in the Big Ten outside of Nebraska and Penn State. With them, the Spartans are ranked 12th in the country and are just a half-game out of first place at 19-4 overall and 8-2 in the conference. In Wednesday nights 61-50...

Finally, the Gophers have a chance to play a bit of consequence-free basketball.

And now, for one night only, the Golden Gophers can play some consequence-free basketball against the Michigan State Spartans. Two wins last week gave the Gophers  a bit of breathing room. Losing five out of six games would have put the Gophers squarely on the bubble, or even the wrong side of the bubble, and Wednesday evening's game in East Lansing  would have been a true...

Spartans may rely on Valentine

Michigan State needs freshman Denzel Valentine to turn his potential into production. Soon. ''I'm expecting big things out of him,'' Spartans coach Tom Izzo said. The versatile guard likely will play an expanded role when the 12th-ranked Spartans (18-4, 7-2 Big Ten) host No. 18 Minnesota (18-4, 5-4) on Wednesday night. ''He's not a freshman anymore...

Michigan State Basketball: No. 12 Spartans look to settle the score against No. 25 Minnesota

EAST LANSING — Remember just one month ago when the Golden Gophers were arguably the best team in the nation? Well, the Michigan State Spartans do. The then-No. 9 Minnesota Golden Gophers (17-5, 5-4) opened the Big Ten season with a 76-63 victory over the then-No. 18 Michigan State Spartans (18-4, 7-2) on the last day of 2012. Fast forward a little more than a month later, and...

Gophers lose to Spartans. Again.

There is no shame in losing in East Lansing, god knows Tubby and the Gophers are used to it.  The Spartans are coming together, are a legit top ten team, and have a well known home court advantage - anybody expecting the Gophers to actually win this game is a pretty big optimist.  Since Michigan State has been going more twin towers they've become very tough to deal with, and...
