MINNEAPOLIS -- Whenever the Gophers needed an answer in the first half of Tuesday's game against Coastal Carolina, Andre Hollins was there. But when Hollins went quiet in the second, other players stepped up. Minnesota found a balance offensively that helped the Gophers pull away from the Chanticleers for an 82-72 win at Williams Arena. It likely will never be a one-man show for Minnesota this season, and Tuesday's win was a prime example of that. "That's what we want to do. When one guy's off, another guy might be on," said senior Austin Hollins, one of four Gophers in double-figures. "You never know. That's why it was a team sport." While Andre Hollins led Minnesota with 19 points, just four of them came in the second half. If was the other Hollins, Austin, with a big second half, scoring 10 of his 15 points after halftime. Minnesota also got 17 points from speedy point guard DeAndre Mathieu and 13 points from Oto Osenieks. Center Elliott...

MINNEAPOLIS -- When Richard Pitino first took over as the Gophers' head basketball coach, sophomore Wally Ellenson had something to tell Pitino. "He walked into my office and said, 'I do the high jump.' I said, 'What does that mean?'" Pitino said. "I'll be honest. At first I was a little against it. I just didn't know what it was."...

Minnesota Survives Coastal Carolina

The Golden Gophers after playing a tough minded Richmond squad last game was in a high scoring affair with Coast Carolina and point guard Andre Hollins led Minnesota again by scoring 19 points tonight to stay undefeated

Gophers need to wake up against Wofford, after Tuesday’s wake-up call.

A wake up call can come in any place at any time in the world of college basketball. The beginning of the season is full of close wins by elite teams over inferior competition, and bizarre losses by not so elite teams against even worse competition. The great thing about college basketball is that losing unexpectedly does not end the season before it begins. In fact, it can save...

Coastal Carolina isn’t good, but they should be an entertaining opponent for the Golden Gophers.

On Saturday night at Richmond, the Golden Gophers passed their biggest test of the season. Using a match-up zone defense, and some timely scoring, they turned a small deficit into a comfortable win. It was an important game for a team still learning what they are capable of. Syracuse is looming in the not so distant future. For a chance for a season-defining victory in November...

Minnesota coach Jerry Kill walked into the room for his weekly news conference and saw a larger-than-normal media throng gathered to listen to his remarks. ''Crowd's getting bigger,'' Kill said with a smile. ''Must be something going on this weekend.'' Only the biggest game in Kill's three years on campus. And Kill isn't about to mess...

It wasn’t the prettiest victory of the season, but the Gophers once against overwhelmed an inferior team and chalked up another victory to defeat Coastal Carolina 82-72 and improve to 4-0 on the young season. The Gophers entered the game expecting to take on one of the weaker opponents of their entire schedule, and early […]

MadTown Badgers: Nine-Point Play(ers) for Week 13

MadTown Badgers: Nine-Point Play(ers) for Week 13 Minneapolis? More like MINNEAP-LOL-IS. This week, I am choosing to feature the Golden Gophers’ offensive line because they think they can pull a page out of the late 90’s Wisconsin teams’ books and pound the opposing defensive line into submission on their way to victory. That’s all fine and dandy, and it may even...
