For anyone that follows the former UNC Basketball players now at the next level has surely watched point guard Ty Lawson and the Denver Nuggets. For many years that was a double treat, as you not just watched the speedster, but also his head coach, George Karl, who played at Carolina from 1970-73 and then has been in the NBA as both a player and a coach. Last year, after Denver went 57 and 25, the front office and the coach could not agree on an extension to his contract and the franchise decided to terminate Karl from his position that he had held since the `04-`05 season. From an article on ESPN.com it sounds like the former Heel is going to join the World Leader in Sports as an NBA analyst. But do not be surprised if Karl does not re-enter the world of coaching if the right spot comes along. What that is… remains to be determined. “I can’t deny that I’m, I guess, low or melancholy a little bit about not being with a team and not being on the sideline, not being in training camp,” Karl said. “Training camp’s probably the most fun for any coach. That’s just the way it is.” This is move to the studios is nothing new for George Karl, who worked at ESPN during the 2003-04 season, the year before he was hired by the Mile High City franchise. The former head coach will debut Friday night on the 11 p.m. EST “SportsCenter”, while appearing on other NBA programming on ESPN’s networks as the pre-season gets going. When asked about his former point guard and fellow Tar Heel, Ty Lawson, the coach said this of him… “When he feels comfortable and he feels confident, I think he has an ability to take any team to a high level,” Karl said. If the speedster can pick up the new offense look for the fifth year pro to do really well for the Denver Nuggets this season. As the season comes closer and closer remember to come back to ISPORTSWEB for updates and information about present and past UNC Basketball players.
