Illinois Basketball: Why did Coleman Hawkins Enter the Portal?

Illinois Basketball star Coleman Hawkins provided quite a shock to Illini fans on Tuesday afternoon. At 1:36 pm, CBS sports analyst Matt Norlander posted on X that Coleman Hawkins was entering his name into the transfer portal, while remaining in the NBA Draft. Of course, with one year of college eligibility still in the talented forward’s back pocket. Initially, a whirlwind of emotions sent Illini media and fans into a frenzy. To be expected. Check out the original post from Matt via X below.

Relax, LOL

At 2:17 pm, the Illini legend responded quickly to the fans and media, to set tensions at ease. He starts his post with one initial comment. “Relax, Lol,” says Hawkins. He continues…

“Illini Nation,

My intention is 100% to stay in the draft and I am fully focused on that process. I wanted to make sure I take every opportunity to protect myself in case of injury or any other unforeseen circumstances down the road.

With the recent NCAA rule change regarding grad transfers, the May 1 deadline approaching, entering the portal gives me the best chance to protect myself in those instances and maximize my opportunities as I go through the pre-draft process.

I love the University of Illinois and I am proud to be earning a degree here. I’m forever indebted to Coach Underwood, and loved playing for him throughout my college career. This was truly one of the best years of my life, and no matter what the future future holds, Illinois will always be home. Signed, Coleman Hawkins”

Reaction

It seems obvious that Coleman is fully intent on playing in the NBA next season. Thought a return to the Illini would structure a heck of a team for Brad Underwood, Hawkins is ready to make the big bucks.  Per NBAdraft.net, the former Illinois Basketball forward will be picked between picks 52-58. Placing him in a great spot to make some really good money playing the sport he loves. The portal entry was a business decision for Coleman. As he stated, he will give himself a back pocket option just in case of an unfortunate injury, or any unforeseen issues. Furthermore, unless there is a drastic change, expect Coleman to be one of the next Illini to touch an NBA court.
