If you asked college basketball experts before the season about Minnesota, some may have predicted the Gophers would improve. Getting a player like Trevor Mbakwe back can do that for a team. But few would have believed they could be a top 10 team and a legitimate Big Ten title contender, especially this early in the season. But Indiana coach Tom Crean isn’t surprised that Minnesota has risen all the way to No. 8 in the latest Associated Press top 25 poll. He actually cited the Gophers prior to the season as a team to watch this year. “But not like I’m a prophet, you could just tell,” Crean said Friday. “Trevor’s just too good. Trevor Mbakwe is too good a player.” As Crean and the Indiana players met with the media on Friday afternoon, it was clear they have a great respect for a Minnesota club that enters Saturday’s game riding an 11-game winning streak. The game between the two games from last year at Assembly Hall was being played in the Indiana locker room on Friday. “It’s gonna ...

Illinois Brandon Paul dunks on Minnesota player

Illinois Brandon Paul is one of the most underrated players in the country and last night he had one of the best dunks of the college basketball season. Paul had the ball out near the three point line and then he beat his defender off the dribble and headed to the hoop. Minnesota’s Trevor Mbakwe tried to stop him but Paul went up and dunked on him. Paul was called for the charge...

Mbakwe vs. Zeller highlights Gophers-Hoosiers

MINNEAPOLIS Trevor Mbakwe heard the rumors just like everyone else did. After Minnesota's convincing win over No. 12 Illinois on Wednesday, word was going around that Mbakwe broke his hand. It would have been a devastating blow for Mbakwe and the ninth-ranked Gophers if it were true. "That was news to me," Mbakwe said Friday of the rumor. "I woke up the next...

The Gophers are good, but don’t say we didn’t tell you so

So, the Gophers just destroyed the Illinois Fighting Illini. The #12 ranked team in the nation. On the road. By 17 points. Which is on the heels of winning their first two conference games by 13 and then 18 points. Honestly, I don’t even know what to say. I’m numb. This is what winning at [...]

Gophers restore order with weekend sweep

MINNEAPOLIS Entering the weekend series against Alaska-Anchorage, the Minnesota men's hockey team was the No. 1 team in the nation but was sixth in the WCHA standings. It was a testament to the Gophers' success in non-conference play and some early struggles against conference foes. Thanks to a hat trick by sophomore Kyle Rau, Minnesota dispensed of the Seawolves by a 7...

Wilcox a huge reason for Gophers' success

MINNEAPOLIS Adam Wilcox came to the University of Minnesota campus this fall for a job interview of sorts. The freshman from South St. Paul was in a competition with junior Mike Shibrowski to become Golden Gophers' starting goaltender. For the first few weeks of the college hockey season, Minnesota coach Don Lucia played each goalie for one game a weekend to see how they handled...

The Gophers can’t quite beat the Hoosiers, but can’t quit either.

There is a reason why the Golden Gophers have never beaten a top five team on the road, and it isn't just a lack of quality Gopher basketball teams. Top five teams, by definition are really, really good. It can take a perfect performance to beat an elite team on the road, and even a perfect performance is sometimes not enough. Instead of achieving their own perfection in the...

No. 1 Gophers 'find a way' to hold off UAA

MINNEAPOLIS For the past two games, the top-ranked Minnesota men's hockey team played like a top-ranked team. The Gophers dispensed of then-No. 1 Boston College by an 8-1 final and took care of No. 2 Notre Dame with a 4-1 win on Tuesday. After performances like that, it seemed all but certain that Minnesota would trounce visiting Alaska-Anchorage, which had as many wins all...
