Fox Sports Houston:
Rice junior guard Tamir Jackson will miss Saturdays game against Tulane as he serves a one-game suspension levied by Conference USA in light of being whistled for a flagrant foul in Wednesdays game against Memphis.
In the second half of the game, Memphis Joe Jackson stole the ball away from Tamir Jackson near midcourt and dribbled to the other end of the floor for a fast-break scoring attempt when he was fouled by the Rice junior. After reviewing the replay, the officiating crew called him for a Flagrant Foul 2 which by rule is an ejection.
While there is not an NCAA rule which addresses suspensions for players called for flagrant fouls, Conference USA has its own league policies in place for such infractions.
We are comfortable that there was no malicious intent or attempt to injure in any way. Tamir displayed proper sportsmanship immediately following the play, said Rice Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan. We attempted to appeal the suspension with the conference office, but were informed that the rule is not appealable.
