Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim sat down for an interview with ESPN’s Andy Katz, which ESPNU aired last night. In the interview, Boeheim discussed some of the changes he’d like to see in college basketball, namely a shorter shot clock and for there to be no early deadline for players to declare for the NBA Draft. According to Boeheim, 30 is a compromise, but he never had issues with a 24 second clock while he helps coach the national team, and that “we can’t sell 24 because every college coach doesn’t think he has enough players to play that.” As for an early deadline, Boeheim is opposed. The NCAA’s deadline is earlier than the NBA’s deadline, but for Boeheim, it doesn’t matter. “There’s no reason for an early deadline. If I lose a Jerami Grant in May, I’m not going to go get another Jerami Grant. I’m waiting for next year.” Boeheim also thinks players should be allowed to declare after they work out for NBA scouts who give them an evaluation on where they will be drafted, saying, ”Let the pros tell them and then let them make a decision even if it’s June 1 or June 15. That’s simple. This is not a hard decision.” Katz and Boeheim also discussed last season for the Orange, the team’s shocking loss to Dayton in the NCAA Tournament, and which players he expects to step up this year. Unfortunately, Katz didn’t ask any questions about this fan’s tattoo of Boeheim’s face, which we’re sure would have been hilarious. [Syracuse.com]
