If you look at the title again, you'll notice that Louisville is mentioned in it before Kentucky.  Yes, I'm slightly biased.  Just thought I'd give you that warning before continuing. The Final Four pits a dream match-up for basketball enthusiasts and the CBS Network.  Louisville vs Kentucky is one of the most popular rivalries in college basketball history - add to it, the rivalry between Rick Pitino and John Calipari who have no love loss between them since the days of Calipari being at UMass and when Pitino coached Kentucky.  If you look at the all time record, Kentucky has a pretty comfortable lead over L'ville with a 29-14 advantage.  If you count a vacated game (tsk-tsk Calipari) - the coaches are dead even at 8-8 against each other. For the Kentucky fan, a win over Louisville wouldn't be enough.  This years Kentucky team is one of the best they've had, and they want to embarrass Louisville. Most pundants think Baylor and Iowa State were tougher opponents than Louisville, which makes sense for Kentucky to get a spot in the Championship Game.  But it's deeper than that.  Kentucky fans are still confused, maybe even still hurt by the departure of Rick Pitino in 1997 when he left for the Boston Celtics.  But it's deeper than that.  When he did return to college basketball in 2001, he became the head coach of arch-nemesis Louisville.  Kentucky fans were outraged that out of any college team across the nation, he'd pick Louisville. For the Louisville fan, this is the ultimate in "one-ups-man-ship."  As mentioned before Kentucky holds the edge in the head to head rivalry,  but never has a game between these two universities meant so much.  Never on this platform.  Never of this magnitude.  For Louisville (who Vegas currently has as a 9 point underdog), beating this Kentucky team means getting the final laugh, in the Final Four.  You don't want to ever say a game like this is like winning a championship but you kind of want to. . . Louisville has watched Calipari consistently recruit "one and done" players and put strong teams on the court which bully most competition, while they've served as second fiddle in the rivalry and in the state.  If (also know to me as  when) Louisville beats Kentucky, it will mean to the Louisville faithful the same as it meant to the Boston Red Sox faithful in 2004 when they beat the Yankees in the ALCS after being down three games to none. The Louisville vs Kentucky rivalry, is one that will be mentioned in a piece I'm working on, which will discuss the best rivalries in team sports.  But considering the Final Four is only a few days away, it seemed only right to put this great rivalry in a light it deserves, separate from all other games in this tournament.

Civil War: Kentucky vs. Louisville in Final Four

Kentucky coach John Calipari likes to say there are no rivalry games at this point in the season. Try telling that to the Bluegrass State, where basketball's version of the civil war - Kentucky vs. Louisville, winner plays for the NCAA title - has so divided the small state that senior citizens have actually come to fisticuffs. Basketball purists may argue that Duke-North Carolina...

Kentucky sports advantage in Final Four

In the press conference after his team beat Baylor to advance for the Final Four, Kentucky Coach John Calipari asked, "Is the floor going to be raised (in the Super Dome)? Does anybody know?" When was confirmed that the floor would, indeed, be elevated a couple of feet above field level for the games, Cal said, "That makes it harder. When they raise that floor, now...

Pitino sees things differently

Rick Pitino will probably never be seen wearing glasses court side, and certainly not wire rims. The University of Louisville basketball coach preferring the heavy dark plexi style, saves them exclusively for press conferences and other situations where he wants to be analytical, nostalgic or philosophical. The Clark Kent look suits him well when he’s not performing Superman-like...

By the numbers: Kentucky vs. Louisville

You already know the players, the coaches and the rivalry at stake, but, theatrics aside, is this game worth watching? Does fourth-seeded Louisville even have a shot at cracking bitter rival, No. 1 Kentucky? First, some interesting numbers to set the scene. 0 The number of Christmas cards Louisville head coach Rick Pitino and Kentucky head coach John Calipari send each other...

Cal to avoid hype, warns against attacking UK

If there’s one thing Kentucky coach John Calipari knows he won’t do this week, it’s feed the UK-Louisville rivalry hype.

3 years after career low point, Pitino back on top

Before the Big East tournament, Louisville coach Rick Pitino told his players they had a choice. Keep playing the same way and Louisville was all but guaranteed of making another first-weekend exit from the NCAA tournament, just as it had the past two years. Turn things around, and the Cardinals had a chance to do something special. ''He pretty much told us the ball is...

Louisville-Kentucky Preview

Kentucky coach John Calipari likes to say there are no rivalry games at this point in the season. Try telling that to the Bluegrass State, where basketball's version of the civil war - Kentucky vs. Louisville, winner plays for the NCAA title - has so divided the small state that senior citizens have actually come to fisticuffs. ''The fans take it as, whoever loses,...

Five for Friday: Coach Cal deserves respect

Five things I'm thinking about this weekend while wondering if the national media would rather have their Final Fours in Houston or New Orleans. 1. Something that seems true (and totally is): The idea that John Calipari just rolls the ball out there is inaccurate and probably always has been. Shoot, you say, give me Kentucky's roster and I could win 30 games. No. No, you...

Rick Pitino On The Dan Patrick Show

Rick Pitino was  a guest on the Dan Patrick show this morning. Pitino talked about why he seems so loose this year. He said it’s because he realizes the end of his career is going to happen, maybe not today, or tomorrow, but at some point. “I’m just going to enjoy every minute of every second of every day,” Pitino said. “It goes by so fast.” Pitino said even though...

Calipari impressed with Behanan, others

Kentucky coach John Calipari says that he “loved” Louisville freshman forward Chane Behanan when he was trying to recruit him.

Missouri's Frank Haith is AP Coach of the Year

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Frank Haith has capped his first season at Missouri by being selected The Associated Press' Coach of the Year. Haith took over the Tigers after seven years at Miami. He was presented the award Friday after receiving 21 votes from the 65-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25. Missouri won 30 games and the Big 12 tournament and was ranked...

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, the spice in Kentucky's offensive recipe

Let's be honest. Kentucky has a lot of weapons. John Calipari's offense makes that a necessity. He recruits so that he has four players on the floor who can attack off the dribble, and he recruits at a high enough level that he can force mis-matches with his elite players. Terrence Jones, when he's on, can be a point-forward matchup nightmare. Anthony Davis doesn'...

Kyle Kuric lights up Louisville presser

Kyle Kuric turned out to be the highlight of Rick Pitino’s press conference, looking for all the world like a happy-go-luck college kid as he entered the room, wearing his adidas Final Four cap backwards. The University of Louisville senior managed to answer a couple of questions before Kenny Klein, the sports information director, may a quick motion with his hands, quietly suggesting...

Cultures clash in commonwealth over UK-UofL game

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- This Bluegrass State rivalry runs deep, and the divide is wide. Just 70 miles apart, Lexington and Louisville are worlds apart when it comes to college basketball. Come Saturday when the Cardinals and Wildcats meet at the Final Four in New Orleans, a berth in the national title game is just the beginning. Here, the game is likened to a civil war. Pick a...
