Louisville only occupied the No. 1 spot for a week as its 11-game winning streak was snapped on Saturday. However, the turnover-minded Cardinals appear poised to get back on track on Tuesday night against Villanova, a team that has struggled to protect the basketball while losing three straight. Fifth-ranked Louisville (16-2, 4-1 Big East) forces 19.7 turnovers a game, the second-highest rate in the country. The Cardinals held a 16-9 turnover advantage on Saturday against Syracuse, but still lost 70-68 to the then-sixth-ranked Orange. It was the Cardinals' first loss since falling to Duke, 76-71 on Nov. 24. Coach Rick Pitino's team - which entered shooting 45.7 percent from the floor - hit 40.7 percent of its shots compared to Syracuse's 49.0 percent. "Give them credit, they made the plays; they made the shots when it counted and we didn't so you have to give them credit," Pitino said. "Great college basketball game and they won it." Louisville's nine turnovers were two more than a season low, but two in the final 30 seconds proved costly. Peyton Siva had a pass intercepted for the go-ahead basket with 26 seconds left, and another pass from the point guard was eventually stripped on the Cardinals' final possession. It was all part of a nightmarish outing for Siva, who scored a season-low three points while going 1 for 9 from the field. Siva is Louisville's second-leading scorer at 11.3 points per game and tops the team with 5.7 assists. "He's mature, I don't even worry about him," said Russ Smith, the Big East's third-leading scorer (19.3) who scored a game-high 25. "At the end of the day, he worries about me. Peyton is Peyton. I expect him to just be Peyton on Tuesday." As for the loss of the team's No. 1 ranking, Siva had seemingly already moved on after the loss. "That doesn't bother me at all," Siva said. "I'd rather have the No. 1 ranking at the end of the year. I really don't mind having the No. 1 ranking at all. We're going to work our way back up to that spot and hopefully get it at the end of the year." Villanova (11-7, 2-3) will be looking to end a three-game skid that could easily extend to five with a home matchup against Syracuse on Saturday. The Wildcats held a 31-24 halftime advantage at Providence on Saturday, but committed seven turnovers in their first 12 possessions of the second half en route to a 69-66 defeat. Villanova finished with a season-high 25 turnovers, including 16 in the second half, and the Friars held a 30-6 advantage in points off turnovers. The Wildcats' 16.3 turnovers per game are the most in the Big East. "I thought we played a good first half," coach Jay Wright said. "In the second half, we turned it over too much. When you have 25 turnovers you are going to have a hard time winning the game." Leading scorer JayVaughn Pinkston (13.3 ppg) bounced back from an eight-point effort in the previous game with a team-high 20 on 8-of-10 shooting against Providence. Louisville owns a 9-8 edge in the all-time series, but has lost five of seven at Villanova. Siva tallied 16 points, five assists and three steals in an 84-74 home victory last season.

Rick Pitino on Louisville loss: We shot free throws like Shaq and Dwight Howard

Louisville lost its second straight tough game in a row on Tuesday night, this time at the hands of Villanova. Over the weekend, the Cardinals lost a tough home game to No. 6-ranked Syracuse. However, the Wildcats are a team they should have beaten. Had they been more successful from the charity stripe, Rick Pitino’s team may have come away with a win. Louisville hit only 12...

Manti Te’o's Fake Girlfriend Tried To Contact Peyton Siva On Twitter

Deadspin.com is the website that broke the entire Manti Te’o fake girlfriend hoax last week, which has become the biggest story of 2013. One of DeadSpin’s most recent articles on the Te’o situation looked back at all of the Tweets from the fake Lennay Kekua Twitter account. It turns out the fake account had contacted Peyton Siva following Louisville’s second round win 18...

Manti Te’o's “Girlfriend” and Peyton Siva

Many of you have probably heard the story about Manti Te’o and how his “girlfriend” who supposedly died of cancer before Notre Dame played Michigan State, did not exist.  Well this now has a tie in with the University of Louisville’s basketball team via Peyton Siva. Lennay Kekua tweeted Peyton Siva during the Cardinals magical tournament run last year saying: “@lovalovaloveYOU...

Rick Pitino Says He Was Devastated With Loss To Syracuse

Rick Pitino spoke with the media earlier this afternoon to briefly recap Louisville’s loss to Syracuse on Saturday and preview tomorrow’s match-up against Villanova. The media got much more of a reaction from Pitino today regarding Saturday’s loss. His post-game press conference on Saturday was brief and not very informative to say the least. I’ve not seen Pitino as upset...

Cards all business preparing for Villanova

After a 70-68 loss to Syracuse on Saturday, University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino met with the media on Monday to talk about the Cardinals’ game on Tuesday at Villanova. Pitino had plenty to say about the Wildcats, the loss to the Orangemen and his team’s progress. Cardinal Authority was there.

The Rundown: Villanova

Rick Pitino and the Louisville Cardinal will look to bounce back tonight from their 70-68 home loss to Syracuse over the weekend as they take on the Villanova Wildcats on the road. As Rick Pitino mentioned at his press conference yesterday, this isn’t the Nova team that we’re used to seeing. Jay Wright’s team is 11-7 overall and 2-3 in Big East play. Nova had won seven straight...

Syracuse 70 – Louisville 68: Post Game Notes

Albeit a close game, anytime you have Peyton Siva and Gorgui Dieng combine for seven total points, it could be hard to beat just about anyone. Cards were right on par with their average of 11.4 steals a game with 12.  That led to a 21-6 advantage in Points Off Turnovers.  That kind of advantage is not typical in a loss. Just under 37% of Louisville’s offense came from Russ Smith’s...

Rick Pitino Compares His Players to Shaquille O'Neal and Dwight Howard

The #5 ranked Louisville Cardinals lost to Villanova last night 73-64.  The Cardinals shot exactly 50% from the free throw line going 12 of 24, while Nova shot 75%.  Louisville coach Rick Pitino blamed the loss to un-ranked Villanova on the poor free throw shooting, and called out two of the NBA's best centers ever at the same time.  “It was really a simple answer to...

Rick Pitino Says Louisville Shooting FTs Like Dwight Howard

Big guys and free throws seems to be a match made in hell, and not just in the NBA. The number 5 ranked Louisville Cardinals lost to the un-ranked Villanova last night 73-64. The biggest disparity between the Cardinals winning and losing was their free throw percentage. They shot 50% from the line going 12 of 24, while the Villanova shot 75% from the line. Rick Pitino blamed their...

Syracuse steals one from Louisville

In a matchup between two top 10 teams, it came down to the last possession.  Unforutnatley, Louisville came out on the losing end after a Syracuse steal in the closing minute.  The game ended 70-68. Peyton Siva has struggled against Syracuse in the past and this game was no exception.  He was 1-9 from the field with only 3 points.  In one of the most pivotal possessions of the...

Lightweight Villanova floors Louisville, 73-64

Inevitable letdown after losing to a top five team. That and a lack of respect from a University of Louisville basketball team for a mediocre-but-fired-up Villanova. Did their fans really rush the court after the game? Rick Pitino, disposing of his tie the second half against Syracuse, staying all buttoned up in his double breasted suit all game long. What’s up with that, coach...

Marquette's Summitt on coaching fast track

MILWAUKEE Tyler Summitt didn't grow up playing video games with his friends. He spent his childhood at team banquets and Final Fours. The son of legendary University of Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt, Tyler was raised differently than most. And that's not a complaint -- it's a compliment. It's one thing to be the son of the winningest coach...

A game to remember for UofL recruit Jalen Lindsey

Anyone need a pure shooter? Among the basketball recruits attending the Louisville-Syracuse game last weekend was Jalen Lindsey, a 6-foot-7, 180-pound juninor from Tennessee. It was his second visit to UofL. Jalen Lindsey Lindsey was also in Louisville over the Christmas holidays, leading his Christ Presbyterian Academy team to an 83-71 win over Ballard in the championship game of...
