Fox Sports North:
MINNEAPOLIS Trevor Mbakwe heard the rumors just like everyone else did. After Minnesota's convincing win over No. 12 Illinois on Wednesday, word was going around that Mbakwe broke his hand.
It would have been a devastating blow for Mbakwe and the ninth-ranked Gophers if it were true.
"That was news to me," Mbakwe said Friday of the rumor. "I woke up the next day, and I got tweets that said, 'How's your broken hand? Someone reported your hand was broken.' I looked at (my hand) and I said, 'It looks fine to me.' "
Mbakwe said he jammed his finger before Wednesday's game against Illinois, but it clearly didn't have much of an impact on his play. The Gophers big man scored 19 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to help eighth-ranked Minnesota get an 84-67 road win over the Fighting Illini.
Now the test gets tougher for both Mbakwe and the Gophers as they head to Bloomington, Ind., to take on the No. 5 Hoosiers. Indiana's r...
BEST OF MAXIM
Thanks to the athleticism of college basketball players, poster dunks happen almost every night in the real of college hoops.
During last night's Minnesota/Illinois tilt, check out Illinois Brandon Paul who rises up to throw down a nasty dunk on Minnesota Trevor Mbakwe:
Interesting postscript: Paul was called for a charge on the play but somehow the basket still counted...
Illinois Brandon Paul is one of the most underrated players in the country and last night he had one of the best dunks of the college basketball season.
Paul had the ball out near the three point line and then he beat his defender off the dribble and headed to the hoop. Minnesota’s Trevor Mbakwe tried to stop him but Paul went up and dunked on him. Paul was called for the charge...
If you asked college basketball experts before the season about Minnesota, some may have predicted the Gophers would improve. Getting a player like Trevor Mbakwe back can do that for a team. But few would have believed they could be a top 10 team and a legitimate Big Ten title contender, especially this early in the season.
But Indiana coach Tom Crean isn’t surprised that Minnesota...
Indiana sophomore Cody Zeller is one of 25 midseason finalists for the John R. Wooden Award, the national advisory board for the award announced on Thursday evening.
Through 15 games, Zeller is averaging 16.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game.
He’s one of four Big Ten players to be named a finalist, joining Illinois guard Brandon Paul, Michigan’s Trey Burke and Ohio...
Illinois’ Brandon Paul is having himself a tremendous season. Paul is second in the Big Ten in scoring behind Deshaun Thomas, and has the Fighting illini off to a 14-3 start.Although Illinois wasn’t able to get past No.8 Minnesota on Wednesday night(67-84), Paul showed why he is a flyer early in the game, dunking all over Trevor Mbakwe. Paul, however, was called for the offensive foul.
So, the Gophers just destroyed the Illinois Fighting Illini. The #12 ranked team in the nation. On the road. By 17 points. Which is on the heels of winning their first two conference games by 13 and then 18 points. Honestly, I don’t even know what to say. I’m numb. This is what winning at [...]
Thoughts on an 88-81 win over the Golden Gophers:
I. The first 20 minutes of this one was Indiana at its finest: Finally back behind a raucous student section coupled with the rest of the Assembly Hall faithful, it was a clinic of sharpshooting from distance (7-of-11, including some deep ones from Jordan Hulls), defense into offense (19 points off turnovers) and a defense that didn’t...
Jordan Hulls (19 points, four rebounds), Victor Oladipo (2o points, six rebounds, three steals), Cody Zeller (18 points, six rebounds, three blocks) and Yogi Ferrell (13 points, eight assists) met with the media following Indiana’s 88-81 win over Minnesota on Saturday at Assembly Hall.
