Michigan basketball (18-1, 5-1), looking to stake their claim as the #1 team in the nation, muscled past Purdue (10-9, 3-3) with a dominant 2nd half performance to grab a 68-53 win. Michigan trailed 33-32 going into halftime but outscored the Boilermakers 36-20 in the second frame to pull away. Glenn Robinson III How They Won Michigan went toe-to-toe with a physical, in-your-face Purdue team and came out on the right side of the battle. Glenn Robinson III had a game-high 9 rebounds as he helped the Wolverines outboard Purdue 35-29. Michigan committed just 9 fouls on the night and won the turnover battle, 10-12. Trey Burke ran a strong floor game with 8 assists to just 1 turnover. He scored 15 points despite an off night from the floor (6-14). 3 other Wolverines scored in double figures as Tim Hardaway, Jr. had 13 on 5-9 shooting, and Robinson and Nik Stauskas each added a dozen. The Wolverines really clamped down on Purdue in the 2nd half as they held Matt Painter’s team to just 8-24 shooting after halftime. Overall, Purdue shot just 21-54 on the night (38.9%). Michigan shot 14-26 (53.8%) after the half and 27-55 (49.1%) overall. Michigan used a 10-0 run in the 2nd half to take control of the game. A key sequence came after that run came to an end as Purdue started chipping away at the lead. After a Rapheal Davis free throw, the Boilers were down just 53-48. Trey Burke went into distributor mode as he set Stauskas up for a big 3 and then fed Mitch McGary for a layup. From that point on, it was basically game over. 3 Stars Glenn Robinson III – GR3 had a typical night for him as he picked his spots offensively, put in major work on the glass, and ended up with a sneaky good stat line of 12 points and 9 rebounds. He shot just 6 times but made 4 of them, including 2 big three balls. Robinson is becoming increasingly difficult for John Beilein to take out of games. He logged a team-high 37 minutes of action tonight. Tim Hardaway, Jr. – TH2 had yet another extremely efficient night shooting the rock. He was 5-9 from the floor (3-5 from beyond the arc). He added 4 rebounds, an assist, 2 blocks, and a steal to his stat line and is really playing some of his best basketball as a Wolverine right now. Trey Burke – Trey just did what he usually does. He ended the night with 15 points and 8 assists, pretty much right in line with his season long averages. He struggled shooting from deep today as he was 0-4 from long range and just 6-14 overall. Despite that, he added 2 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. News and Notes Tim Hardaway has shot 20-41 (48.8%) from three point range over his last 8 games. The ball has never looked so smooth coming out of his hands as it does right now. When he shoots well, Michigan is virtually unstoppable offensively. Nik Stauskas is 5 of his last 17 (29.4%) from three point range, covering his last 4 games. After a sizzling start to the season, Burke has begun to struggle with his shot as well. Over his last 4 games he is shooting just 21-58 (36%) from the floor. However, his field goal % for the year still sits at a sturdy 50.8%. Michigan outscored Purdue 36-24 in the paint. Only 6 fast break points were scored in this game as Purdue tried to take the air out of the ball with their methodical approach. Michigan had 4 of them. Up Next Michigan will take to the road on Sunday looking to knock off Illinois (15-5, 2-4). Illinois started the season off hot but has fallen on hard times since the Big Ten season kicked off. Sunday’s tip is set for 6:00 pm eastern and will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
