One of the most disappointing tenures in announcing history is reportedly set to end with a whimper.  Jason McIntyre at TBL has multiple sources inside ESPN that say the network will not renew Bob Knight's contract at the end of the college basketball season.

Knight (sorry that's supposed to be Coach Knight or Mr. Knight) has been an ESPN college basketball analyst since 2008 and his departure from coaching.  Initially, ESPN praised Knight's hiring as a "compelling listen" and hailed the former coach as a "legend."  Knight could be a decent game analyst when he was engaged, but his wealth of knowledge and insight about the game never made it to viewers at home.  The only thing that proved to be compelling about Knight's ESPN career was the controversy he created and the material he provided blogs.  Knight's public, petulant feud with John Calipari and Kentucky reached ridiculous levels when the former coach wouldn't say the name of the eventual national champion last year.  In fact, it was news when an ESPN college basketball analyst finally spoke the word "Kentucky."  The mini-controversy exposed the absurd favorability and leeway ESPN provided Knight, who was able to play by his own set of rules.

Knight's other notable moments as an ESPN broadcaster?  I can think of three:

1) The time he swore on College Gameday.
2) The time he fell asleep on College Gameday.
3) The time he forgot what the shot clock was.

And that's it.  TBL even notes one source inside ESPN saying the network has gone as far as hiding Knight on unattractive games this season.  Knight has mostly called SEC games this year on ESPN2, so there's certainly some legitimacy to that idea.  Additionally, his presence across the "family of networks" has been diminished greatly since he had his own SportsCenter segments at the beginning of his analyst career.

Knight's legacy as a broadcaster is one ESPN would rather forget.  There couldn't have been many observers who imagined his notoriously irritable personality would translate well to television, but Bristol bent over backwards to bow down to the mystique of The General and his ESPN sweater.  The mystique quickly faded as Knight never connected with viewers and he slowly moved out of the college basketball spotlight.  It's another lesson that great coaches and players don't always make great analysts.

  • Bobby is Bobby. ESPN knew full well when they hired him that he wasn't going to change his behavioral patterns. To ESPN his knowledge of the game over rode his past.Unfortunately Bobby has two sides to his personality. The good one is not portrayed on TV.Best of Luck Bob. You'll rebound like Wilt the Stilt!
  • Bobby IS the greatest!!!!
  • This clown should have never been hired by ESPN..Knight exemplifies the worst of college basketball...
  • I will take Bobby Knight anyday over the clueless Dickheaded Vital. Vital was a second rate coach that should have never been given a job above Girls High School ball. He is what is wrong with college basketball Bobby Knight produced procudtive human beings Vital promotes the gangsta player
  • thank you espn for now bringing back that ill-tempered, egotistical ALPHA HOTEL.
  • Coaches don't always make good analysts just as analysts don't make good coaches or players. But that never stopped them. Vital is an idiot who likes to sell himself. Knight is the best and one of the last coaches who built character among his players by making them work in the classroom and on the court.

Rooting for injuries is never a classy thing to do, but it’s safe to say there are very few Louisville fans who are weeping over the fact that Kentucky has lost freshman Nerlens Noel for the remainder of the season. Noel, who was averaging over 10 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game, suffered a season-ending knee injury during a loss to Florida on Feb. 12. The Wildcats are now...

John Calipari’s daughter takes shot at Louisville fans

The above cartoon is from Erin Calipari, the daughter Kentucky’s basketball coach, and  in response to a Courier-Journal cartoon as seen below. Erin Calipari tweeted out the drawing with the caption, “This would be my cartoon. #UL #BBN” I know it’s in good nature, but I am not a big fan of The Courier-Journal taking a shot at Nerlens Noel, an 18-year-old, who is out for...

Stallings: Kentucky still very talented

Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings addressed the SEC media on Monday. Stallings said the Wildcats are still very, very talented despite the loss of star Nerlens Noel. Both Vandy and Kentucky have fallen quite a bit since strong showings in the 2011-12 season.

John Calipari’s daughter takes shot at Louisville with cartoon

Erin Calipari, the daughter of Kentucky head coach John, drew this cartoon and released it on Twitter in response to the Courier Journal's Nerlens Noel cartoon.

Rocky Topped: Tennessee 88, UK 58.

Life without Nerlens Noel took an immediate free-fall at the hands of Tennessee. After was was described as a horrid practice, John Calipari did not feel too confident about this upcoming contest with the Vols. I guess he had a right to be, but nobody would have predicted such a lopsided outcome. The 30-point defeat is Kentucky’s largest loss to the Vols in the series history,...

Bryce Harper gets benched for 'lack of hustle'

Photo: @sportingnews The Nationals had a closed door meeting Thursday night, after they were blown out by the St. Louis Cardinals. Now it hasn’t come out exactly what was said in that meeting, however it seems that maximum effort was something stressed. Matt Williams told reporters after the game that Harper had been benched for “lack of hustle.” In the bottom of the 6th inning...

Are the San Francisco 49ers in store for a blowup season?

On the surface you could look at all the recent success for the San Francisco 49ers and easily assume they’re well on their way to being perennial contenders for a long time to come. But despite their 36-11-1 record over the last three years which included a Super Bowl trip in 2012 and NFC Championship game appearances in both 2011 and 2013 under Jim Harbaugh, the team seems to...

Is Miguel Cabrera this generation’s Hank Aaron?

On June 20, 2003, Miguel Cabrera struck out in his first big league at bat.  He’d get the last laugh however. In the bottom of the eleventh inning the 20-year-old rookie hit a two-run home run to help his then-Florida Marlins to a 3-1 victory over the then-Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Now, I bring that up only to awkwardly segue into this. Friday, the reigning American League MVP turned...
