Brison White scored a career-high 20 points to lead Northwestern State past McNeese State 78-63 Thursday in the Southland Conference opener for both teams. DeQuan Hicks had 14 points and eight rebounds, and Jalan West added 10 points for Northwestern State (7-4). Northwestern State shot 60 percent (18 for 30) in the first half and held McNeese State to 36.1 percent (13 for 36) in the period to take a 43-31 lead into halftime. McNeese State got within one-point in the second half, 46-45, on Dontae Cannon's free-throw at the 15:12 mark, but Northwestern responded with a 24-10 run to take a 70-55 lead with 4:12 left to play. Northwestern State held McNeese State (6-5) to 35.1 percent (13 for 37) shooting in the second half. James Hulbin had a career-best four blocks to help the Demons match a season-high with 10 blocks. Cannon led the Cowboys with 15 points.
