Twitter/@BoydGaming It’s been a pretty amazing year for Louisville men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino. Unfortunately, his luck ran out at today’s 139th running of the Kentucky Derby. Orb, the original favorite, won the race in thrilling fashion, coming from behind on the final stretch. Pitino’s horse, Goldencents, did not finish in the top three. Owning 5% of the Kentucky Derby winner would have been the proverbial icing on the cake to an amazing 2013 for Pitino. Still, his Cardinals won the NCAA Tournament in dominating fashion, defeating the Michigan Wolverines for their first national title since 1986. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. His son, Richard, was hired to become the next head coach at Minnesota. Things could be worse. Ridden by jockey Kevin Krigger, Goldencents was competitive for the majority of the race, but eventually fell to the middle of the pack on the home stretch.  Pitino purchased his stake in Goldencents in the summer of 2012 for $5,000. The horse was originally bought for $62,000 at an auction by Dennis O’Neill, the brother of trainer Doug O’Neill, yet even before today it had already won $1.25 million in prize money.  Orb (7-1) was originally the favorite to win the famed race, but the wet conditions of the track led to Revolutionary eventually moving to 5-1 odds early this morning. Just before the race, the two horses were named co-favorites at 6-1. Goldencents was listed at 7-1 right before the start of the race as well.
