PLAYERS: Bubu Palo
TEAMS: Iowa State Cyclones
Iowa State basketball player Bubu Palo, reinstated last January after he served a suspension, has been dismissed from the team. Palo originally was suspended last year after being charged with second-degree sexual assault. That charge was dropped in January of this year and the university's Office of Judicial Affairs cleared him to play, allowing him to return to the team. But that decision was appealed, the university said in a statement released Saturday, and Palo then was found to have violated ISU's Student Code of Conduct, resulting in his dismissal. Palo, a senior from Ames and a reserve guard, played in 17 games last season, averaging 2.8 points. 1.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists.

  • Charges were only dropped because the prosecutors were convinced the defense team of sharks would try to shred the victim to pieces. There was plenty of evidence showing sexual assault. The infamous "blue blouse" was never considered to be important to the prosecutors, but the defense team saw it as their one chance. There was not one second that the prosecutors did not believe their victim. Many critical motions were denied for this trial. Everyone associated with the trial was local-which did not help. The victim went through hours and hours of grueling and traumatic depositions that mentally and physically broke her down. The respectful team of prosecutors believed she could not handle the stress and the local and state publicity of the trial. There was considerate evidence of sexual assault and other important information that the public was not allowed to know because motions were denied.Having this trial in another location along with non-Ames natives (judges, attorneys, etc.) would have been fair to the victim. Everyone had close ties to the case. President Leath is not from Ames nor Iowa. He made an objective decision.
