On his radio show Wednesday night at Buffalo Wild Wings, Rick Pitino made a statement that seems to have caught a lot of people by surprise. Pitino said that after the season he will encourage juniors Russ Smith and Gorgui Dieng along with sophomore Chane Behanan to test the NBA waters. Pitino says he insists that all three players enter their name in the NBA draft to be evaluated at the next level. He went as far as saying that as of right now he doesn’t think Gorgui shouldn’t come back because his draft stock could possibly drop due to his age. Gorgui recently turned 23. The updated mock draft at DraftExpress.com was updated on Monday with Dieng being projected to be taken at the end of the first round while Smith was projected to be drafted early in the second round. Chane Behanan was not listed in the updated mock draft. Considering how weak the NBA draft will be at the guard position, Russ Smith is the one player that I could realistically see leaving early. It’ll be tough for ...

Pitino looking for smarter play, seven wins

University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino met with the media on Wednesday night prior to his radio show at Buffalo Wild Wings. Pitino was previewing Thursday’s game against St. John’s but – obviously – answered more question’s about last Saturday’s historic five-overtime loss at Notre Dame. Cardinal Authority was there with this story and video:

NBA would be a waste for Gorgui Dieng

Gorgui Dieng has said more than once that his primary objective at the University of Louisville is getting a college degree. The sheepskin is what his Mom and Dad want, too, first and foremost. Presumably within four years after enrollment and before he would even consider professional basketball. Now we get word, however, that Coach Rick Pitino wants Gorgui, along with Chane Behanan...

Focus on Russ Smith a distraction

From all indications, Russ Smith isn’t comfortable as a team player. More comfortable in a lead role. Russ will continue to dazzle at times, scoring plenty of points, making awe-inspiring dunks, creating chaos for opposing guards on defense, with a few steals here and there, causing his fans to rant and rave. But he will also continue to be a ball hog, taking contested shots while...

Video: Wayne Blackshear Says His Shoulder Is Fine

Wayne Blackshear went down in the second half last night holding his surgically repaired shoulder. Judging from Blackshear’s grimace, it looked as if he was in some serious pain. Fortunately for Louisville, it sounds like it was just a minor tweak. The post Video: Wayne Blackshear Says His Shoulder Is Fine appeared first on The Cardinal Connect.

In State Guard Receiving Interest From Louisville

Louisville’s 2013 recruiting class was thought to be complete after signing four players in September, but that hasn’t stopped Rick Pitino from continuing to evaluate the available talent in the class. Dominique Hawkins, a 6-foot point guard from Madison Central High School in Richmond, KY, is a name to keep an eye on. According to Steve Moss of WKYT, Rick Pitino is one of them...

Russ Smith spark lifts Cards past St. John's

Russ Smith scored 21 second-half points, including 12 straight over a 3:03 stretch that put No. 12 Louisville ahead for good and helped the Cardinals beat St. John's 72-58 on Thursday night.

Pitino finally talks about Notre Dame

Took a few days for Rick Pitino to get fight through the pain of blowing six opportunities to put Notre Dame away. The goal now is for the University of Louisville to sweep the last seven basketball games. Video: Jody Demling.

The Rundown: St. John’s

Rick Pitino and the 12th ranked Louisville Cardinals will look to bounce back tonight from their five overtime loss to Notre Dame over the weekend as they host the St. John’s Red Storm. Louisville opened as a 19-point favorite, but that line has quickly dropped the 17. Louisville leads the all time series 10-4 and has won six of the last seven meetings between the two schools....

Pitino wants to get Dieng more rest

University of Louisville men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino said on Thursday night after a win over St. John’s that he has to get junior center Gorgui Dieng more rest. Cardinal Authority has what Pitino said and the reaction from Dieng.

Updated Louisville Football Roster

An updated Louisville football roster was published at GoCards.com earlier this afternoon. There aren’t a whole lot of surprises on the updated roster, but here are a few takeaways. I reported last month that running back Jeremy Wright was not expected to be back for his senior season. There still hasn’t’ been an official release about Wright, but he is no longer on the Louisville...
