I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t wish former Louisville forward Rakeem Buckles was on the floor with the team when they won the 2013 national championship just a month ago. Buckles was a part of Louisville’s 2009 recruiting class and had things gone the way we had hoped, he would have been a senior on this year’s championship team. Buckles’ collegiate career hit an unfortunate road block between 2011 – 2012 as he suffered two torn ACL’s in less than a calendar year. He decided head back home to Miami, FL., and attend Florida International, where Richard Pitino had recently been hired. Buckles spent the 2012-13 season rehabbing and will finally be healthy and ready for his final year of college basketball in 2013-14. Just as things started to get better for Buckles, he again found himself in an unfortunate situation. There are no trades in college basketball. However, rarely, it sure feels like it. Today is one of those days. Joe Coleman will be transferring out of the program while Malik Smith, a senior shooting guard from Florida Internatonal, will be a Golden Gopher next year. Smith will be eligible right away.
