C.L. Brown of the Courier-Journal is reporting that Florida International assistant coach Mike Balado is the frontrunner to replace Kareem Richardson on the Louisville staff.
Balado spent just one season at FIU where he was an assistant for Rick Pitino’s son, Richard, who recently left Miami to take the head coaching job at Minnesota.
Many expected Belado to follow the younger Pitino to Minnesota as the director of basketball operations. However, that position was given to Steven Goodson who served as a special assistant last year to Tubby Smith at Minnesota.
Prior to joining the staff at FIU, Belado spent time as an assistant at High Point, Miami, and Florida Atlantic. “Mike Balado has great experience in the college game as well as the junior college ranks,”Richard Pitino said when hiring Belado last year. “He knows the state of Florida and will be able to recruit from top to bottom. He is a tireless worker and will bring a lot to our staff.”
