Rutgers has never been much of a conversation starter in college athletics. Even though they won the first ever college football game, Rutgers is currently 38th all time in wins and they haven’t had a powerhouse program since… maybe ever. They claim one national championship and, seriously, it’s from 1869. The women’s basketball team has been a final four contender a few times in recent years but is mostly known for being the butt of some racist Don Imus jokes. Those are the highlights. Pretty much all of them. Well, in the past year Rutgers has really put a push on gaining some attention for their inter-collegiate athletics programs. First, the school joined the B1G! That’s huge news for a school with such a sorry overall tradition. The football program previously known for being the team that didn’t get thrown out of the Big East for being terrible (that was Temple!) and for once beating Princeton 6-4 will henceforth be know as the team that’s not as bad as Purdue, and maybe even Maryland! Things are looking up, right? Not content to be simply known as the B1G’s corollary to Hawaii joining the union, Rutgers expended some serious effort to [...]

Rutgers symptom of a sick system

The most galling part about this Rutgers mess isn't simply that the incompetence of the university has reached near-buffoon levels.
