St. Bonaventure Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt suffered a tough loss at #22 Illinois last night.

Up 39-30 with less than six minutes to go, it looked like his Bonnies were going to get the school’s first victory over a ranked opponent since 2002. Instead the UGLIER than it sounds game with a 48-43 final score was in Illini favor.

Schmidt’s postgame press conference was sullen, especially so for his star forward Andrew Nicholson, who sat beside him mostly silent.

“We had good looks. It’s not like we were playing against some Division III team. They’re 9-0 for a reason. I wish we made some more baskets, but we didn’t,” Schmidt said in his very thick New England accent.

But I saved his best soundbite for after the jump.

“We’re losing to really good teams, Cleveland State is a heck of a team, Virginia Tech is an ACC team, and Illinois is 9-0 the last time I saw, it’s not like we’re losing to the guy that stands on the Cap’n Crunch box,” said the Providence native who played his college basketball at Boston College. I think he just meant to say “guy on the Cap’n Crunch box” instead of guy who “stands” on it. Either way, take a second look at Cap’n Crunch. (Who I assume has achieved the nautical rank of Captain given his garb) Clearly this guy cannot ball. At all. And I think that scheduling him, wait- just him? Wouldn’t he need at least four ship mates? Or maybe him, Tony the Tiger, the Honey Smacks frog, Toucan Sam and the Trix Rabbit as your opposing starting five. Scheduling a game like that would KILL your RPI rating, and hurt at large seeding come March. Therefore Schmidt has done the right thing in scheduling tough before the Atlantic 10 season. His team is 3-4, but the only bad loss among those is Arkansas State; the other three are nothing to be ashamed of for a middle of the road A-10 team.
