Twitter/@D_ham5 A lot of people thought that UConn’s new permanent residence in the American Athletic Conference would put a damper on recruiting. It did no such thing. UConn fans woke up on Saturday to the news that top recruit Daniel Hamilton (No. 27 in the ESPN 60 for the Class of 2014) had committed to the school for the 2014-15 season. Hamilton, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard from Los Angeles visited UConn last weekend, and Dinos Trigonis reported that he enjoyed his visit so much that UConn appeared to be a favorite to land him. Hamilton retweeted that report and signed five days later. Ya boy just committed to Connecticut #huskyguard can’t wait instagram.com/p/ZKExT9oApG/ — Daniel Hamilton (@D_ham5) May 11, 2013 Cal, Houston, Oklahoma State, San Diego State, TCU, UNLV and UTEP all made offers to Hamilton, and Kansas and Louisville had expressed interest. For the first time, head coach Kevin Ollie has shown that he intends to use his Los Angeles connection. The former UConn guard came across the country to play for Jim Calhoun and always says that he never regretted it once. Hamilton will be one of two Los Angeles players in 2014 if to-be junior guard DeAndre Daniels stays past next season. Some believe that Daniels could be a lottery pick in the NBA Draft after next season depending on what kind of season he has. Hamilton is the first player to commit to UConn from the Class of 2014. Former North Carolina State guard Rodney Purvis is transferring to UConn for next semester, but will be ineligible for this season due to transfer rules, meaning he can play again in 2014. UConn currently has offers out to 18 players for 2014, including No. 1 overall Jahlil Okafor. Kelly Oubre, the 43rd ranked player in the class, said a couple weeks ago that UConn is making the hardest push at him. Congrats to my lil bro @d_ham5 committing 2 UCONN #HuskyFam #FollowHim — DeAndre Daniels (@D_Daniels2) May 11, 2013 @d_ham5 committed to Uconn? Another big name guy committing for 2014.
