Head Coach Dan Mullen and his bulldogs look to inprove their record from 7-6 and 2-6 in the SEC. The bulldogs did end the season with a close win in the Music City Bowl against Wake Forest 23-17 in 2011. The bulldogs looked solid on defense in 2011 holding opposition to 19.7 points per game even though allowing 172 plays of 10 yards or more, still, placing them 4th in the SEC and 16th in the nation. Offensively they only managed to score on just 55% of red zone trips ranking them 9th in the SEC in the red zone and 93rd in the nation.
The Bulldogs return 13 starters in 2012 with 5 on offense including the quarterback, 7 on defense, and 1 specialist.
Key defensive returners include linebacker Cameron Lawrence, cornerback Jonathan Banks, and defensive tackle Josh Boyd all totaling for 245 tackles, 7 interceptions, and 7.5 sacks.
Key offensive returners are quarterback Tyler Russell, running back LaDarius Perkins, wide receivers Chad Bumphis , Arceto Clark, and offensive guard Gabe Jackson totaling for 15 touchdowns, 422 rushing yards, 55 receptions, and 4 interceptions.
Mississippi State improves their team with top recruits defensive tackle Quay Evans, defensive end Denico Autry, defensive tackle Nick James, cornerback Will Redman, middle linebacker Richie Brown, and outside linebacker Beniquez Brown.
