Colts Offensive Coordinator Pep Hamilton with Andrew Luck on the Stanford Sideline(USA Today)
Well…that didn’t take long! Colts Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arians’ seat wasn’t even cold when the Colts announced his replacement on Friday. Shortly after Arians gave his introductory press conference as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, Pep Hamilton was named the Colts offensive coordinator.
There are a few Colts who won’t need an introduction to Hamilton, who ran the offense at Stanford with Andrew Luck, Coby Fleener, and Griff Whalen among his star players. In fact, Hamilton’s official title last season was the Andrew Luck Director of Offense. A Stanford alum endowed Luck the position namesake and he reluctantly accepted. No word on whether Hamilton will adopt the same title with the Colts…my guess is no.
I must admit, I was a little disappointed by Arians’ departure. I was hoping he would stay close to Coach Pagano, who still has a long recovery ahead of him. On the other hand, I know Bruce will always be there for Chuck, even if it’s not on the sideline. And after all he did for the team this season, Arians owes it to himself to pursue his dream.
That being said, I am beyond excited about the Stanford offense coming to the Colts. I think this is another bold, exciting, and progressive move by General Manager Ryan Grigson, who can’t seem to miss when it comes to key positions. And reuniting Luck with the offensive coordinator he had so much success with is nothing short of genius. Hamilton was also interviewed to replace Chip Kelly as head coach at Oregon.
As for Coach Arians, I thank him for leading the team and the fans through a memorable and inspiring season. I wish him luck in his new venture. But he’s going to have to find his own Luck now. And I don’t want to tell him how to do his job, but he should probably invest in an offensive line first.
I was going to say there’s still time for Arians to change his mind…but that’s no longer the case. The Colts have moved on.
In 2013, it’s all about Pep and Luck.
