The 2013 NFL Draft could be the first time since 1964 that a running back has not gone in the first round. There are two main reasons for this. The first is that there are no truly elite running backs in this year's Draft. There's only one who could be worth a first round pick - Eddie Lacy of Alabama - but he is projected to go in the late first round so it's easy to think he could slide into the second round. Especially since he has a lingering groin tear injury and did not perform at the Scouting Combine. The second reason is how the NFL has changed over the years. The NFL is less about the running game and more about the passing game. The need for a top-tier running back is no longer a pressing issue for teams. It is possible to draft a running back in the second round or later who could put up the same numbers as someone taken in the first round. An amazing 10 of the 16 running backs to rush for 1,000 yards or more in the 2012 season were drafted outside the first round...
