Jeremy Shockey should not play next season as a Giant. They don't want him, he knows it, and it's time to move on.
Tom Couglin has not had an easy four years. He endured the barbs of the New York Media. He dodged bullets named Tiki. (right after he taught him how to hang on to the football) He brought in Kurt Warner. (pretty sure he wanted us to forget about that) He battled Terrell Owens on two different rival teams in the postseason. (1-1 head to head in the playoffs by the way) He won the freakin' Superbowl! He also was forced to put up with a very loud-mouthed Tight End. Coughlin has won the right to demand respect from everyone but I don't think he's going to get anything from Shockey. Too bad for Shockey; the Giants won a Superbowl without him.
As a talent, Shockey brings a lot to the table. He's a big fast target that creates match up problems on the football field. He plays with a crazy reckless passion. check it He also posesses the intangible ability to energize the fans and his team. As a tight end though, he's often required to perform other, less glamorous assignments... namely blocking. Shockey doesn't like to block. He likes to catch the ball and level defensive backs. When he feels he's doing too much blocking he has no problem making it known he thinks the coach is making a mistake. He's certainly never had a problem throwing Coughlin under a bus. Remember this?
"We got outplayed and outcoached. Write that down,"
...And so we have. Betcha Coach Coughlin remembers this too. It seems to me that everything Shockey does well for the Giants, he ends up destroying with his attitude. Once his attitude left the huddle, the Giants went out and won a gosh darn Superbowl. During the big game, Coughlin wanted Shockey's toxic attitude as far away from the team as possible. Goldilocks wasn't even allowed on the sideline. Despite what other people have said, I think that was certainly a personal decision. The Giants won the Superbowl. Shockey keeps barking. Too bad big guy. You've got no ground to stand on anymore. Why on Earth would anyone side with you against the man who beat Tom Brady?
Shockey knows his time is up. He wanted to go to New Orleans and the Saints would be a perfect fit. They are, however, in the same conference and they have the potential to be big time contenders. Why would the Giants give them another weapon? (I can't believe I'm about to say this... here goes) If Shockey knows what's good for his career, he'll follow Chad Johnson's leave and show up for work. The Giants already proved they don't need him. What leverage does he have? They... won... the Superbowl... without... him...
