Let’s be honest, the whole targeting issue in college football has been a joke since its inception this season. It’s not that the rule itself is useless, it’s the referees who seem to be incapable of ruling what is and is not considered targeting. Just earlier today South Carolina’s Brison Williams was ejected for it but after the replay clearly displayed Williams hitting the UCF receiver below the shoulders the ejection was overturn. Will they ever get one of these rulings correct?
As of today that answer is yes. Notre Dame linebacker Ben Councell was ejected from a game earlier today for targeting after an obvious head-to-head hit on Oklahoma’s Brennan Clay.
Defenseless player? Check. Hit above the shoulders? Oh yeah. 15 yard penalty and ejection? Without a doubt.
