Boston College Credit the Eagles for playing hard and for always-entertaining linebacker Luke Keuchly's incredible effort. But there was no way BC was going to defeat Florida State, not even at home and in prime time on a Thursday night. The Eagles don't have enough fire power, as evidence by their 207 total yards in the 38-7 loss. Grade: D. Clemson Did not play. Duke There really wasn't a whole lot Duke could so about slowing down a focused Miami team Saturday. Duke continues making strides, but when a team as talented as Miami is on a mission to right a wrong, it's going to have its way with a Duke. That's what happened in a 49-14 loss to the Hurricanes that was as ugly on the stat sheet as the final score suggests. Grade: F. Florida State The Seminoles did a nice job of taking advantage of opportunities in jumping out to a big early lead over Boston College before coasting to a 38-7 victory on Thursday night in Chestnut Hill. E.J. Manuel was solid, the ground game decent, and the defense was swarming, holding BC to just 207 yards. Grade: A. Georgia Tech Did not play. Maryland If Maryland was due to play well again this season it would have been Saturday at home against inconsistent Virginia. But instead of rattling so-so quarterback Michael Rocco, the Terps allowed him to throw for 310 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-13 home loss. Maryland turned over the ball five times, as a surprisingly ugly season continues rolling downhill more rapidly each week. Grade: F. Miami The manner that Al Golden's Hurricanes responded to the ugly home loss to Virginia was so impressive that it may have been more a glimpse into the future of what might be under the first-year coach when he gets into years two, three and beyond. This was a focused effort and a most impressive one in a 49-14 drubbing of a Duke team that has been mostly competitive all season. Grade: A. North Carolina Maybe the next regime at UNC will do a better job of getting the Tar Heels ready for the level of angst they deal with annually when facing N.C. State. The game is clearly more important to the Wolfpack, and that's an absolute shame. UNC lost, 13-0, and put forth a game plan and mental effort that was head-scratching, to be kind. The ill-timed talk initiated by interim head coach Everett Withers looks even sillier after the loss. Grade: F. N.C. State The Wolfpack was prepared, executed and played with great intensity in dispatching their arch rivals for the fifth straight year, 13-0, at home. State was better in every phase of the game, especially in the first half, where UNC didn't get a first down until the final minute of the half. The silly war of words between the coaches earlier in the week may have been a draw, but the Pack held UNC to 177 yards and won the game, and that matters more. Grade: B. Virginia Michael Rocco passed for 310 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Cavaliers routed a falling-apart Maryland team, 31-13 in College Park. Kris Burd and Tim Smith each had more than 100 yards receiving, and overall, UVA amassed 524 yards and is now bowl eligible. Nicely done by coach Mike London. Grade: A. Virginia Tech Did not play. Wake Forest There isn't much difference between Notre Dame and Wake Forest other than the programs' histories. But on the field, Wake was every bit as good as the Irish on Saturday with the exception of messing up some key second-half possessions. Wake left at least 10 points on the field after halftime of a 24-17 home loss, clearly costing itself the game. A poor start to the second half didn't help, either. Grade: C. ACC Wake losing to Notre Dame doesn't help the league, though it certainly would have helped had the Deacons pulled it out. N.C. State winning puts the Pack one step closer to bowl eligibility, and Virginia avoiding an upset is also a good thing for the league. Grade: C.
