Alabama QB Ty Simpson to Return in 2024
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — In the era of the transfer portal, many college football quarterbacks take the opportunity to leave their first school and transfer out if they don't play immediately. That won't be the case for Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson.

Multiple reports surfaced on Wednesday that Simpson would return to the Crimson Tide in 2024, and they were confirmed by Simpson's father via a report from TideIllustrated.

Simpson is a former 5-star recruit who was a redshirt freshman this past season and competed for the starting quarterback job with Jalen Milroe. Simpson ultimately lost the job, but saw the most playing time in Alabama's road win over South Florida, where he entered a tie game in relief of Tyler Buchner and helped the Crimson Tide come away with a tight victory.

For the rest of the season, Simpson served as the team's QB2. He totaled 179 passing yards on 11-of-21 passes in six games this season.

While next season's starting job is assumed to go to Milroe — who finished sixth in Heisman Trophy voting in 2023 — Simpson will have every chance to compete and earn his spot.

Alabama's 2024 quarterback room now looks like one of the most loaded in the entire country, with Milroe and Simpson returning as well as the addition of 5-star recruit Julian Sayin, who enrolled early and practiced with the team during bowl week.

Next season's Crimson Tide quarterback room will be without freshman Eli Holstein, who entered the transfer portal earlier on Wednesday.
