SMU coach June Jones had accepted an offer to become the head football coach at Arizona State and some minor details were still being worked out. The deal was all but done. Then his representatives received a call earlier today saying that the offer had been pulled. Jones’ camp has said that Arizona State’s explanation was that it took too long and the school’s president had decided to move on. A source said, “We had accepted the deal. I’ve never seen anything like this.” Early on Wednesday the school let it leak that Jones would be announced as the new coach, now SMU president R. Gerald Turner has told The Dallas Morning News that he will be the Mustangs’ coach in 2012. The Sun Devils have now started and ended talks with Houston’s Kevin Sumlin and agreed to a deal with and pulled it from Jones.
