After getting fired from his post as offensive coordinator of the New York Jets earlier this week it appears that Brian Schottenheimer may be landing on his feet. Alabama head coach Nick Saban has been known for some out-of-nowhere assistant coaching hires in the past and apparently now he is interested in bringing Schottenheimer in to run his offense.

Saban just lost offensive coordinator Jim McElwain, who left to become the head coach at Colorado State. That leaves the OC spot open and while Schottenheimer was unceremoniously dumped by the Jets after six seasons as the franchise’s offensive coordinator, he is just 38 years old and has years of NFL experience.

Schottenheimer is not currently in Alabama, but Saban has reached out to speak with him. If Saban has quickly tried to contact the newly-fired young OC, he’s obviously interested in bringing him on board quickly. Remember that National Signing Day is just around the corner and Alabama will want to have a full staff in place to help with recruiting. Getting a young offensive mind with NFL experience could be a big draw for some players.

Schottenheimer knows the SEC well, as he played quarterback for the Florida Gators under Steve Spurrier. He served as Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel’s backup and was a part of the Gators’ 1996 national championship team. He also has college coaching experience, as he spent a year as an assistant coach at Syracuse in 1999, before spending a year at USC in 2000.

This could be a really quick rebound for Schottenheimer especially after he became the scapegoat for all the ridiculous turmoil that happened with the Jets and their offense this season.
