Bryce Brown was once the most sought-after high school prospect in the country. Back in 2009 as a 6-foot, 215-pound running back out of Wichita, Kansas, Rivals.com ranked him as the nation’s top player. Everyone wanted him. My how things have changed.

Today it is being reported that after a tumultuous college career that has seen him bounce around the nation, Brown has decided to withdraw from Kansas State and is considering making himself available for the 2012 NFL draft.

For those who don’t know, Brown originally committed to Miami as a high schooler, but then didn’t sign a letter of intent on National Signing Day. Instead he waited and decided to make an official announcement later and committed to Tennessee, in one of the more bizarre recruiting sagas in recent memory.

But before even stepping on the practice field at Tennessee, Brown’s eligibility was in doubt because his recruitment was handled by “family friend” Brian Butler, who happened to be a former felon. The NCAA eventually cleared the young running back.

As a freshman at Tennessee Brown rushed for 460 yards and three touchdowns on 101 carries. He appeared to be on his way to a productive career. But on the first day of spring practice in 2010, he announced his decision to leave the program. His brother Arthur (a highly touted linebacker) had recently decided to leave Miami to attend Kansas State, and Bryce decided to join him.

Then in 2011, both Bryce and Arthur were named in Yahoo! Sports’ investigation into alleged violations at Miami. Former booster Nevin Shapiro claimed he had showered gifts upon the Brown family in an attempt to secure Bryce’s commitment. The benefits received totaled around $2,000.

After sitting out the 2010 season, Brown saw limited action in two games this season, rushing for 16 yards on three carries in Kansas State’s season opener against Eastern Kentucky, before getting in briefly against Miami.

Now it appears his college career is over before it ever got off the ground. Brown is obviously immensely talented, but there is clearly something wrong with him and his family. Something not quite right is going on there and it has cost him what could have been a fantastic college career.
