By JAMES CARR@jamescarr89 HOOVER, Ala. -- The Georgia Bulldogs endured another tumultuous offseason, but the effects might not be as bad as it seems on first glance. Star running back Isaiah Crowell, the AP Freshman of the Year in the SEC last season after rushing for 850 yards and five scores, was dismissed from the team this summer following an arrest on a felony gun charge -- but the Bulldogs might have enough firepower without him. Coach Mark Richt feels more confident about filling the void. Ken Malcome was the starting running back in the spring game after having "the best spring out of anyone out there,'' Richt said. "We've also got a couple of true freshman who are coming in, Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley, who are very talented guys. The running back position is one where young guys can come in and make a big impact, so hopefully they'll do that.'' Marshall was rated at the No. 1 running back in the nation by Scout.com They also have utility man Richard Samuel. Samuel began his Georgia career as a tailback. After a few long runs, memorably against Arkansas, Samuel was asked to move to linebacker to make room for what was at the time a plethora of running backs. Most of those running backs left the team -- for one reason or another -- so after sitting out a year to learn the defense and gain weight, Samuel was asked to move back to running back. Samuel obliged. After a decent season that was cut short due to injury, Samuel was again asked to switch backfield positions, from tailback to fullback. But after Crowell's arrest, Georgia lacked depth at running back yet again. Guess who was called to fill the hole. Richard Samuel. "Richard is, first of all, a very unselfish young man, very talented, talented enough to be considered to play a couple of different positions and unselfish enough to do whatever the team needs to win,'' Richt said.
