Curt Schilling announced today on his blog that he will retire from Major League Baseball for good. Schilling says that he is retiring with zero regrets.
Curtis Montague Schilling started his playing career with the Baltimore Orioles. He started four games for them in 1988 at the age of 21, and was 0-3 in 14.7 innings. He would go 1-6 for Baltimore before being traded for Houston for Glen Davis.
Schilling spent one season in Houston and was 3-5 in 56 games, mostly in a reliever role. The next year he was traded to Philadelphia the next year for Jason Grimsley, and that's where his career would take off. In 1992, he was 14-11 and the next year had a career best, at that time, 16-7 record with 186 strikeouts and a 4.02 ERA which was up from 1992's 2.35.
In 1993, Schilling helped his team to the World Series except to lose in the final game when Joe Carter hit a game winning home run off of Mitch Williams. Schilling wouldn't taste the World Series until 2001. He would go through Philly with a 95-84 record. He was traded to Arizona in 2000 for Omar Daal, Nelson Figueroa, Travis Lee, and Vicente Padilla, all quality players.
The Diamondbacks were relatively a new team, established in 1998. The Diamondbacks made the playoffs in 2001 behind Luis Gonzalez and Randy Johnson. Schilling had a Cy Young year going 22-6 with a 2.98 ERA. The D'Backs would beat the Yankees 4-3 in the World Series and Schilling would capture his first World Series ring and would be co-World Series MVP with Randy Johnson.
Schilling would go 23-7 the next year. Then in the offseason he was traded to the Boston Red Sox for Casey Fossum, Brandon Lyon, Jorge de la Rosa, and Michael Gross. Schilling would have a 21-6 record in 2004 and would pitch in the ALCS against the Yankees and defeat them with a bloody foot. That would be Schilling's legacy.
The net few years he has been plagued by injury. He did not pitch last year and in 2007 he would be 9-8 and win the World Series again. He had three World Series rings.
Schilling ends his career with a 216-146 record. He tallied 3,116 strikeouts and a career earned run average of 3.46. Schilling is a sure fire first ballot hall of famer when his time comes.
